1/25 @ 260mm -?
Looks alright, especially considering there's possibly a bit of motion blur in this image.

I've just compared the user-confusion-diagrams...eeer...MTF-charts of the 70-300L and the 70-200 f/4 IS: They look very similar at the tele end, which is probably great news.

This is the one that the guy at the camera store will hand to the person that has no idea what they're doing. It's pretty easy for them to say, "It zooms more than the 70-200 f/4 IS, but it weighs less than the 100-400 IS" (and it's priced between the two). I can see this becoming a favorite of the wannabe pro, that really has no idea what they're doing.

Except it is about as sharp as the 70-200 f4, lol

Strange release indeed. Glad I picked up the 70-300 IS when I did.

If this is priced at 1500 or anything near that, its way overpriced. If this came in around 1k, i'd purchase it, otherwise 70-200 f4 IS it is.

it will be interesting to see how the new L compares with the new tammy 70-300 VC USD with 1/3 the price.

70-300 has always been a pretty popular focal length and if the image quality proves to be as insanely good as that of the 70-400 f/4 IS then it will probably be a wise choice for many people, especially some of those who would otherwise consider the 70-200 f/4 IS + 1.4x TC for added reach (which leaves you with a 100-280mm with constant f/5.6).

It's not the lens that's controversial, just the price IMHO.

Not everyone wants to lug around a 500mm lens unless you really need it.

I would be surprised if Tamron's VC is gonna be as good as Canon's IS. I also bout their new USD drive will be as good as Canon's USM. I also doubt it is gonna be nearly as sharp given what happened with their 17-50 VC.

I work for Japanese auto OE, and we are very much struggling this.
Canon is setting their price point not so much for just today but 1-2 years forward as well.
As consumer I hate it, as business person I can easily see their ROI calculations.

btw, I'm also one with 55-250 IS kit who went looking at Canon website this morning for some tele upgrade lens options and was surprised to see this, see everyone here is all over it. I'd like $1k max as well.....
now instead do I get soon outta stock 70-300 $529 @B&H (external link), or 100-400L $1,610 @ B&H (external link)(which may be upgraded in 2011??)

I don't think anyone expects it to be as good. The question will be, is the Canon worth the $800 premium?

Needs to be around $700

yep.

I wonder what the street price will be?
I wonder what it will be with it's first rebate?

I'm hoping when we combine both of those factors (and after we see some reviews/sample shots) I can pick one up for ~$1k and sell my 100-400 for a bit more so I actually MAKE some money which saving some weight. I love my 100-400 optically, but for how I use it I don't like the bulk.

BTW: Anyone noticed how the back of the lens (everything behind the tripod mount ring) looks almost exactly like a copy of the 15-85 (in white, that is)?

Canon should the sell a kit with the 70-300L's sealed mount and a red rubber band for the "15-85 is a secret L"-people. :p

I like the compactness of the 70-300mm DO and I was saving up for it. (Primarily to be able to take it into areas with size/length limitations on lens). Now they announce the new 70-300mm at about $250 more than the Do version and at much better quality, just a tad longer. Sigh, another decision process coming up for me.

Not everyone wants to lug around a 500mm lens unless you really need it.

Which is why I would take my 70-200 f/4 at $470 (what i paid for it a couple of years ago) instead. The 500mm has its purpose as you said. So if there were a 200-500 available (or cheaper 500mm prime, ala 500mm f/5.6 IS) i would use that for sports and wildlife/birds while using the 70-200 for travel and portraits, kids around the house type stuff. The 70-300 would work as a 70-200 replacement (at 2x-3x the cost), but does not replace the 500mm.
