A Comment, and Poll - New DSLRs w/o Video Anyone?

With all the new DSLRs being announced lately, I'm sure there are some people out there that would like to see a new DSLR introduced that doesn't have video.

I would hope that some manufacturer might do this, if only to spur the others, Canon chiefly among them, to give us this option. Something like a 7D class without the video would be great. Personally, I think the market for this would be greater than the market for a 60D super Rebel.

But, I suspect I'm in the minority here, and would like to take a poll, if just out of curiosity.

What would be great about it? It would just be the same camera without video.

Video costs nothing and has no impact on the operation of the camera so where's the problem?

There should be a cost benefit, albeit small in comparison, and a reliability benefit as well due to lower complexity.

Since cameras have Live View, it's really just a software implementation (which is why they can update it via firmware like they did with the 5D MKII). The only hardware are the tiny microphones, which maybe cost Canon $0.05.

I say no video. They use it as a marketing ploy so they don't have to make the still photos much better then the previous model. To me it's the same as adding tons of MP.

But I don't like live view either.

You do macro photography and don't like LV? Surprising.

I almost never use video on 5D mark II but I have no problem with it. So it's fine as long as Canon is not putting a higher price tag just because it can do video.

You can eliminate video by eliminating Live View because all video is is capturing the Live View stream.

How can something be complex if there are no moving parts involved? Mirror gotta move every time to take still shots but it only has to move once per video cycle. Therefore, video is less stressful on a camera than taking still images!

So if it saves $15 on a $2000 body and lasts 15 minutes longer is it worth it? That's the kind of "small in comparison" type numbers we are likely talking.

Granted, but software development, support, and some minor hardware design implementations translates into higher development costs overall. Some of this development cost can be reduced, and eventually realized in lower retail costs. And I know some software development engineers that would argue their development costs are higher than that of hardware.

Are you aware that the 5DMkII hit the street at a lower price point than did the 5D Classic when it was released?
