70-200 F4 IS focus problem

im new to this lens so maybe im doing something wrong. Ive been using the 24-105 lens before this one and I can get the lens pretty much right on top of a flower or etc im focusing on. The 70-200 I have to be a good 4-5ft away to autofocus correct?

When im at this distance it seems to focus about 1-2inches behind what I actaully have centered to focus on. Im using the center spot focus dot on the 50d if that matters but it seems to ovbershoot the focus.

I was focused on the flower and bee but it picked the buds behind the flower which are tac sharp. Ive tried a couple quick shots on distance objects and focusing is ok. Is this just a issue up close on objects? Do I need to send the lens back to get calibrated?

You will definitely need to be further away. The minimum focusing distance is 3.9 feet on that lens. That said it should be able to focus very quickly on the selected focus point. What body are you shooting with?

using the 50d... i backed up and everything seems fine there. I wanted to make sure it wasnt something wrong with the lens. Seems the farther away with that lens the better it does. Its very quick also.

Have you tried to micro adjust the lens on the 50D?

i tried but it looks like its in perfect focus untill i get it on the pc scrren to edit.

Do you have the limiter set to 1.2m?

Yes I had it on 3 but for close up I moved it to 1.2

it could have be just me... 90% of the shots look great. These were the first shots so ill test it more this week. Still has warranty anyway.

I havent done any micro adjustments within the camera and etc... if needed I may need to fine tune that.

another shot as I backed about 6ft away.... everything seems fine at that distance. I really need a macro lens also since you cant have the best of both worlds

I tried the microadjustments on the 50d but never really saw any difference when I focused on some letters about 5ft away. So I put it back on 0 in the middle. Maybe I was just to close so it focused on the rear of the flowers. I had the camera set on f5.6 also
