It's possibly the start-up time as you say - I though I'd noticed more of a pressure 'step' on the button rather than a consistent press from nothing to full travel...

Mine only just came back from a long rehab ... but still looks very anemic, bordering on passing out. :)

Can anyone help me with something? The manual seems to suggest that it's possible to have RAW+Jpeg going to CF with JPEG going to SD, but I can't get it to do it. Is it possible?

I don't think you can set that combination. You can have one (different if you wish) file type to each card, or the same one or two file types to both.

I don't think it will do it.

No it will not. The closest is to have both RAW+jpeg registered on both cards. When selecting the "Separate store"-function you can never select RAW+jpg, only one format on each card.

See manual page 56-60

Did I read somewhere that Canon have made certain buttons more prominent / redesigned the ergonomics slightly?

I tend to find that I press the 1D4 AF-on button on the vertical grip a lot more in landscape orientation and fire up the autofocus by mistake than I remember doing on the 1D3. I sometimes have to turn off the vertical grip to stop it.

One thing I wish they did, was redesign the body so you can use the back wheel as effectively in portrait mode as you can in landscape mode. In portrait, if you want to use the wheel, you have to move your whole hand (at least I do.. and my hands aren't small) to get to it, wheras in landscape, it's just a flick of the thumb.

I discovered something that may not be obvious to anyone using spot metering linked to the active focus point.

I noticed unusual behavior when shooting. It was acting like the various focus points were giving me different meter readings. After reading the manual and the screen of the camera it was something I was doing wrong. I initially thought it may be a firmware bug, it is not.

When you have your camera set up to enable all 45 focus points, the camera uses the center focus point only. However, if you switch your camera setup to utilize only 19 focus points, they will all meter correctly. (Or any other setting less than the full 45 of course.)

I thought I would pass this on to everyone here. It wasn't really intuitive.
