There was a firmware update that was supposed to help with the banding. I don't have banding that is too bad. In the photo I posted, I only really see 3 very faint bands, and I didn't do anything to them... Like I said, that is with no noise removal at all.

My comment wasn't addressed to you specifically, but thank you for the info on the banding firmware change.

I remember that release and it never really addressed the real banding issue, there was a separate vertical banding issue in certain image recording sizes that the firmware fixed, it didn't do anything for the horizontal chroma bands that start to become really noticeable at 6400 and 12800. On some accounts, some owners actually thought the banding was worse, but it is hard to to really tell without very specific before/after shots in the same exact conditions at the same settings.

Yeah, I don't know, because I don't have very many shots at high ISO before I did the update... and the ones I do have are not very good. I've become much better at getting a proper exposure recently.

That is the definitely the key, banding or not. If done correctly, the banding should be reduced a bit and therefore easier to clean during post.

Here are some of my 12,800 shots... The final shot is at 25,600 (pushed +1 EC in post).

Only used lightroom for processing.

With all digital cameras shooting RAW at high ISOs, the relative (histogram) exposure has little or no effect on SNR. What really matters is the absolute exposure; IOW, how much light hits the sensor. To increase the absolute exposure means that you are decreasing the real ISO. So, the only way to improve noise is to not use higher real ISOs, by increasing exposure time, and/or opening the aperture. Exposing ISO 6400 "well" vs exposing ISO 3200 poorly, gives the same noise result if the Av and Tv values are the same.

However, with most CMOS sensors there is a big difference if it is ISO 200 vs ISO 100; ISO 200 with +0.5EC will have significantly less noise in the deep shadows than ISO 100 with -0.5EC.

Canon 7D with the 24-70mm 2.8 at 12800 ISO. I think I had the in-camera noise reduction set to strong.

A family member had their tendon in their foot and calf cut and cleaned from plantarfascitis (?) and had flowers that arrived from friends. Photo op!

I have found 12800 on about any camera great for the action where you make something look like a painting too. Like this from the 7D, directly out of camera, resized, then original run through a custom action I created last year.
