Griz at Hyder

This pair was the entertainment at Hyder in Alaska a few weeks ago. What a ridiculous place Hyder is! We went as a side trip enroute to Prince Rupert and I think its one of those been there, done that places for sure. Just us, these two and a hundred other people. Yuk. Might as well be at the zoo. But the little guy's markings are interesting.

Neat shots. Any higher resolution? What were you doing in Prince Rupert?

Yes, these are just downsized for here. They were interesting to watch. We were in PR headed on the ferry to Haida Gwaii. Just returned from 3 weeks in BC and HG. We returned to the US from Sydney down near you.

I lived in Prince Rupert for 6 years and I always found Hyder amusing. Most days (especially in late August / early September when the Dogs are running) you could still get up at the crack of dawn and work your way along the Salmon River at one of the many access points (go past that total monstrosity of a look-out the Forest Service built about 10-years ago) toward the road to the old Grand-duc site and usually have the place to yourself and see piles of bears, eagles and other wildlife (if you could put up with the smell of rotting fish!). About 9:30 or 10 o'clock the tourists would start showing up in droves after sleeping in and stopping at the King Eddy for breakfast and start setting up on the designated look-out (with lots of big glass...) with a hundred of thier closest friends and complain that there were no bears!

The big glass is a spot on comment. I had my 200 and had way too much lens. There were people with 500's and 600's including a few who were handholding 100-400 zooms in the light of an overcast early evening. Must have gotten nice shots of her nose hairs! We drove up to Salmon Glacier and made many stops along the way, (travelling with a flood plain researcher) but we only saw one other bear on the drive back, little black one at the edge of the road. We were early though, for the height of the salmon runs. Maybe for people who don't see grizzlies much Hyder is interesting but if you see them regularly it is just a sad little spot. The town of Hyder and Stewart in BC were kind of fun to shoot though. The Toaster Museum, now that is seriously good times.
