A friend came to me in need that she was desperate for one good picture of her 4 week old niece that she needed to get a large print ASAP. A few photographers were booked and I told her I had been trying to practice taking baby pictures and would love to try it out. I had no time, no props, no cute hats, etc. since it was so last minute...so had to kind of work with what they had. It was my very first attempt at a real "shoot" with anyone, so I had lots of challenges with a) it being a newborn b) finding available light at someone else's house and c) not really knowing how to do "the pose", etc. It was so hard!! Kudos to all of you that make it look so easy.

Anyways, I wanted to share some of the pictures that, once I worked on them PP, I thought came out not 'horrible' for a first shot. I have plenty to work on (I know my white balance is a problem, for sure) and would love any CC you guys have. I know they are all close-up pics, but I wasn't sure the best way to capture a full-bodied pose since she wouldn't stay curled up nice and was showing a little "too much" for the camera!

#1. I have this in both color and BW and it was the best full type pose I could get.

#2. She had to have a blanket on the whole time

#3. Mom's favorite pose (with her hat that she had there)

#4. They wanted this halloween hat...not my favorite choice but I kind of liked her hand by her face

#5. Tried to get a foot shot

#6. I ran out of space on my card right when she finally opened her eyes! So it was a mad rush to snap a picture...I know her hair missed the focus

Thank you! I'm glad you like some of them :) I didn't know if the halloween hat worked well since it is so harsh orange and black for a little baby girl...but I'm glad that you think it is cute!

Mom's got to be happy with those. Nice work.

I like #1 and #3 in particular. But, I think they all could benefit from a little more depth of field. The blanket in #3 goes OOF pretty quickly, for example.

I think these are great. Can you explain what you do to get the skin so smooth?

I completely see what you are talking about. The pictures would look a little sharper too, maybe? I thought it was okay on the first one, but can definitely see how the background gets completely lost. That is something to work on! I definitely want to figure out some good background/props as well that won't get too lost back there.

Sure! I used the Portraiture Plug-in by Imagenomic (in PS3) to get the baby smooth skin. I read about it on here before and tried the 15-day trial to see if I liked it. It did wonders for smoothing baby skin that had little flakes and red bumps on it!!

Wow, thank you so much! So nice of you to say... I'm glad I can disguise complete inexperience. :) It was pretty nervewracking since I had never done anything like it before but definitely a great learning experience!

You had me fooled if this was your first time! I love them! The foot one is soooo precious. I'd take a print of that.

Love the foot one- the lines show up nicely.
Also like the white hat with the flower one- more obvious she's a girl
REALLY love the one with the halloween hat- the pose- those adorable chubby cheeks and mouth so unbelievably cute- but like you mentioned- not really liking the hat colors.
The first 2-3, can't tell if it's possibly the angle of her eyelashes but looks like she might have some "gunk" on them :)

Great job- so terrific for your FIRST attempt??!!!!

Loving my new camera! I have absolutely NO idea what I'm doing with it,
but giving "hobbyist p

Nice job!! I love #1 most with her eyelashes cleaned up :) #3 is great too! There are a few flakes and a red mark on her eye that are distracting me...but great shots, just a little cleanup!

It's really a subtle and purely subjective thing. I clicked through to see the bigger pics at flickr and it looked like all of them were shot at f/1.4. Shooting at f/2.0 or f/2.2 would give a larger d.o.f. (so, in shot #3 perhaps all of the baby's head would be sharply in focus) and probably improve the overall sharpness of the photos.

Again, it's really a subjective preference thing and I'm just a rank amateur myself.
