Another male, sorry guys.

Care to share the set-up? I can see the main light coming from a softbox camera left, I guess there's another soft light on camera right for fill... anything else?

The reason I'm asking is that I love it and want to shamelessly rip it off ;]

I can never get my self portraits to come out the way I want them to. The colors never pop, they are never sharp, they always look noisy, etc.

XTi + 17-55 2.8 IS + 430EXII; camera left, 1/2 power, shoot through.

Cole_Schmitt wrote in post #10944921 (external link)
It might be my white balance (although I'm shooting in auto), it may be my exposure, whatever it is, it's not working. About the remote; I do have a remote, but I only have one flash receiver so I use the remote to focus, change to MF, and use the timer. From there I use trial and error to get the lighting I want.

Maybe I need to get out of my basement when doing self portraits...

Self-portraits aint always easy!! :)...your shot is definitely underexposed though - quite surprising given you were at 1/2 power @ f5.6. What modifier was you using that is sucking up the power?? You can make colours pop in pp once you get the exposure right in the first place. :)

And I don't understand your method with the remote - if you have one, why are you focussing and then using the timer???...doesn't your remote have a shutter release on it?

Matt, where's your trampoline? Landing is so much more fun with a trampoline.

Your deconstruction is pretty much on the money. There's a shoot through umbrella camera left, almost touching my face and slightly forward of me. Camera right has an unmodified flash coming from fractionally behind. No contribution from ambient. I'll attach what it looks like pre the heavy tweaking in Lightroom.

Dunno, it's whatever LR's standard sharpening algorithm does.

The main chunk of the PP is to crank all of the following sliders up near 80 - recovery, fill light, blacks, contrast and clarity, while taking saturation down toward -80. That should get you in the ballpark, fine tune from there.
