Alright, I just sold my 5D Mark II and put my 300mm f/4 up for sale (for sale thread).

So now I'm looking into my options to enter the 300mm f/2.8 world...

Here are my main contenders:

1. USED Canon 300mm f/2.8 L IS

I'd have to pick this one up used as a reasonable price. They do seem to come around the classifieds every once in a while, but not as often as I'd like. Might be a while before I can get that one and we're already 4 games into my sons 14 game soccer season...

2. NEW Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG

For ~$3000, these can be had brand new. Reviews are good and it would be, well, new... Only downside seems to be that it's "not quite" 300mm apparently. And it's not quite what the 300mm L can be - or so I think.

3. NEW NEW Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG

No, I'm not repeating myself. Sigma just announced a new version of their lens with improved IS and IQ:
http://dpreview.com …9/10092117sigma100300.asp (external link)

Not much is known about this lens with the most important missing fact being the price right now. And if I decide to wait for this lens, I run into the "we're in game 4/14" problem again...

So, what do I do?

And for the record, options I am NOT considering:

- Canon 300mm f/2.8

I rented the non-IS version of the 300mm f/2.8 last year and was honestly not that impressed with that lens. CA was a bit heavy and sharpness was good, but not as good as the 300mm f/2.8 IS samples I've seen. If I pay this much for a lens, I'd like to be impressed... Also, I don't want to sing thousands into a lens that Canon no longer supports.

Where to from here?

All I can say is my 300 2.8 non-IS is far and away the sharpest lens I have, even wide open!

I shot with the 300 2.8 covering the Brickyard 400, and I liked it....but I dont like it any more than I do my f/4

With price being the biggest factor to me, I got the 120-300 f/2.8 DG, and I'm very happy with the purchase. The approx. double in price to a used 300 f/2.8 IS or (presumably) the new 120-300 f/2.8 OS aren't justified to me.

If you're willing to spend the money, I'd probably wait and see how the new 120-300 turns out. If it stacks up well, I would strongly consider it over the Canon 300 f/2.8 IS.

I just picked up an old Tokina 300mm f2.8 and I like it a lot. Got it for a mere $925 and it's in pristine condition. Not a bad way to enter the 300/2.8 world.

I've owned the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 DG and now the Canon 300mm f/2.8 and there is no question in my mind that the two are in different leagues. I wanted to like the Sigma, but the AF drove me crazy, and shooting at f/2.8 was dissappointing. I even sent my copy back to Sigma, and I didn't see any improvement and ultimately sold it. I now have the 300 f/2.8 IS and it is every bit as good as they say it is. As the saying goes, "Buy once, cry once"

Well, a used 300mm f/2.8 L IS came up and I bit the bullet!
Thanks for your insights guys, your opinions are much appreciated!

In a few days, I should be the (hopefully lucky) owner of a shiny Canon 300mm f/2.8 L IS !!!

:)

Good choice. In the end most folks get the canon.

I love my 300 2.8, even if it isn't IS. Amazing lens, to say the least! Even hand-held one can get very sharp shots. I've hand-held this lens with both a 1.4x or 2x TC and find the results amazing. See photo. I hate to resize this, but it does give you an idea! This was with the 300 2.8 non-IS with 2x TC hand-held from my car. The fox was in one of my neighbors yard, and I just happened to have camera with me!

Got the 300mm f/2.8 IS today!
Couldn't do much with it yet since I'm at work, but I did stop by a duck pond on the way here.

These are obviously not ducks, but a fun test nonetheless:

I'll try to get some real tests at my sons practice today! After that, it'll get it's first workout at this weekend's soccer games!
