Your observation is correct. When you see lightning, it is going from the ground up.

I believe that the first instance is is always "ground up"... then an approximate magnitude of 10x responds "from sky down"

Yea they were, it was at the Pixar Exhibit in Oakland CA. They didnt allow any photography in the exhibit, but that didnt stop me from taking pictures blindly from my waist only checking the LCD screen for exposure. LOL

^^ apart from the hand in the corner, nothing seems blown out. another reason to expose to the right. great quality! focus is spot on the eye! beautiful picture. b&w works great.

did you play a lot with brightness/constrast/c​urves?
what was the lighting source?

horizon not leveled

try adding some vignette maybe?

Played with the contrast quite a bit and upped the brightness slightly.

Was shot with a 430EXII flash just stuffing around outside.
