For weddings i usaly take the 5DII + 24-105L and the 50D + 70-200IS f/4. Also i'm mostly taking my 17-40L, my 50mm f/1.4 and my 85mm f/1.8 with me.

Flash 580EXII and 430EXII with planty of battery's!!!

So you could rent the 5DII with the 24-105L and use your 50D + 70-300IS as a second.

---------------
5DII ~ 7D ~ T90Film 17-40L ~ 24-105L ~ 70-200L F4 IS ~ Sigma 18-250 OS HSM Macro ~ 50mm f/1.4 + f/1.8 ~ 85mm f/1.8 ~ 100mm f/2.8 Macro ~ Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro

No offence meant by this BUT...
If you need to ask what lens/equipment your second shooter should be using at a wedding you are shooting, do you really think you should be doing the job at all?

Knowing what gear to take and use should be a pre-requisite and instinctive especially if you are going to be photographing weddings and asking people to pay for your services.

Maybe I've missed something?

For a second shooter:

5D2 24-105L Auto ISO TV mode 1/100sec F4 throughout
If you fancy it add a 580ex and disable the flash via the camera but switch it on (on the flash) for focus assist.

Or swap it for a 24-70 2.8 depending on the sizes of the venue.

Hi Phil

No offence but...I'm doing a wedding for a friend which is unpaid. I want to do a good job so I thought I would post a few questions on here to see if I was on the right track. Did you read the other posts? I did actually suggest a few lenses, does that mean I know what I'm talking about?

I thought this forum was all about sharing and trying to help each other out? Clearly I must be on the wrong forum or perhaps you are? No offence.

Go big or go home. 400mm prime. Have the second shooter sit across the street and take photos through the window.

It will be AWESOME

Hehehehe.

I wanted to buy a Canon 5D in the near future for myself. I have now decided to rent the 5D (that I will use) and my partner will use the 50D with which ever lens I am not using:)

A 28-135 won't fit on a 5D, so I guess you have your answer.

I strongly recommend that you rent a second 50D for yourself and maybe a good lens or two such as the Canon's 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L IS as well.

You cannot afford the wrath of the bride if your camera dies and you have to stop working. Thus, the spare camera that's the same as your primary.

You will benefit greatly having the faster lenses available as well. What you have in your signature block is quite slow and, in my opinion, inadequate for wedding work.

For the second shooter, I'd recommend the same stuff.

Why not? Isn't the 28-135 a EF mount?

For the indoor shots you need primes. I would recomend to rent a 135L or the newest 70-200 2.8.

It makes sense to rent another 50D. I would prefer to use equipment that I know well on a wedding. Or you spend a week with the 5D before the wedding to get to know the camera. You could end up ruining all of the shots becouse you are not used to the equipment.

If you have to rent a camera for youre second shooter I would ask the question why she is not having her own camera? If she is youre wife it makes sense. But if she is someone else I would question if she will be doing the job good. A partner that are taking shot for the first time is only going to get great shot if she is lucky.

Wow thanks everyone, great advice...

My partner is my 'partner'. She knows how to use the 50D quite well:)

I shoot weddings. The 24-70 is my bread and butter on the 5D2, but the 85 1.8 (the 1.2 is too slow) is what I use for portrait work or in low light. The 70-200 2.8 IS is what I put on my 70-200 2.8 Is, but if I need it, I will put that on the 5D2 at the reception for candids. If you were really needing to have the second shooter and gear, I'd get the 5D2, 70-200 2.8 IS and the 24-70. I use both cameras and about 5 lenses at a shoot and have at least 1 other person using my equipment adding a 40D. If I had my way, I'd be 3 people, 2 using 5D2's and 1 using the 7D.

Good luck!
