The pinup dot - is it overdone

Ok, I realize where it came from and all the people who copy it. I'm talking about the big circle behind a girl shot usually on a white background on pinup type shots. Does it really add anything? How do you fell about it? Would or have you done it? Let's just get it all out in the open and discuss it.

Use a fresnel spot sure, but that added in after the event dot.... grrr

What does your client think?

The technique may be the most overused, cliche, dated, tacky look around, but if the client likes it, just sell it to them.

I'll frequently throw a different "look" onto a slideshow image, just to get the client thinking out of the box. More often than not that image will be on the print order sheet.

Its a style that was used for pin-up in the era, and photographers are just trying to re-create that style using photography. I personally don't like it and think its over used, but it is representative of the era and pin-up artist.

I haven't done it. I have many images that would work with the style. I was debating about putting it in my portfolio.

Just don't put a feathered photoshop blob there. it looks like an accidental brush click on a layer behind her.

Well that's what they all are. Either that or a hard circle with a feathered white inside.

what's "overdone" to us phtoographers who look at many images everyday may still be very fresh to your models, clients, etc. (except caution tape, that's overdone period ]

I like the dot and the look of that era.

Besides caution tape (red danger tape ok), I refuse to shoot "model on railroad track" unless it would be editorial and have meaning. I REALLY can't stand those.
