Sigma 85 1.4

$1400, seriously? Wow.

B&H and Adorama had it at about $900.

$1400 was just MSRP, I know it will sell for less, sounds like $900 to me.

Yeah, $900 seems to be the going rate. But even still, it's hard to beat the 85/1.8 value the Canon has. I can't justify the upgrade based on the few samples so far. Looks good, but... I only paid $300 for my 85/1.8 =) (actually, paid ~$270 for a new one, sold it, then bought a used one for ~$330, so it evens out, heh)

At $900 street price it's going to have to be one stellar lens for me to pay roughly 3x's the price of my 85 f/1.8. If the CA issue with the Sigma is much, much better than the Canon I might consider it.

Here in Canada the price of the Sigma 85 f/1.4 will be about 66% more than the Canon 85mm f/1.8 once you add the price of the hood to the Canon (I didn't add the price of lens pouch to the Canon although the Sigma comes with one but I generally don't use the ones with my Sigma lens).

My dilemma is whether to buy the Sigma 85 f/1.4 or for a bit more money get both the Canon 85 f/1.8 and the Sigma 50 f/1.4.

Hopefully once the reviews start rolling out everyone will have a better idea of what this lens offers for the money. Even at that I would have to actually use one myself for a bit to see what I think. I'm not at all unhappy with my Canon 85 other than that CA thing but there are ways to address that and since I primarily use the lens for basketball it's not much of an issue anyway. Looks like I'm already talking myself out of considering it, which is probably good since I don't have a lot of extra "fun" money laying around right now.

might also need to factor in how the 85/1.8 hood attaches... I hate that thing with a passion

Agreed! I can't stand that hood. It irritates me every time I use it that I had to pay extra for such a crappy design. It would still be a POS if it was included but paying more for it just sucks. I still like the lens itself though!

^^^^ + 1... waiting on more detailed reviews first to decide if its worth the money. I keep hearing people wanting to know if the lens will solve the CA issues of the 85 1.8..... but am I the only one that is hoping the Sigma 85 1.4 will have much better colors, contrast and bokeh quality over the Canon 85 1.8 ? That honestly has been the biggest let down to me of that lens.... the colors and contrast are really just very lacking when compared to my other lenses. If the colors, contrast and bokeh quality is near the 85L II and the AF of this lens is fast like the Sigma 50 1.4 I think despite all the crap Sigma has done Im still in for this lens.
