A couple random ones when cleaning up the yard today. BTW, I just received (literally, 5 minutes ago) the focus confirmation chip I linked to. Has two shims, guide and the chip. Perhaps this weekend I'll get around to installing it. I'll keep everyone posted.

Woah! That's some impressive results, but I'm still uncertain if I should pay 140$ more for the Canon f/1.8 or not...

The Tagotech website says that the AF confirm chip is to be installed on an adapter... but if the manual focus lens has a Canon mount, can the chip be installed directly onto the lens mount instead?

I put my confirm chip right on the lens mount. Hot melt glue it on there and you're all set.

Thanks!

I just did some research... didn't like the results:

Canon 85/1.8 = $370
Bower 85/1.4 = $350
AF chip = $27
Sigma 85/1.4 = $900
use Canon 85/1.2L I = $1200

It seems that the Canon 85/1.8 is the better deal... USM AF and you "only" lose 1.8 to 1.4. Maybe I have to dig a little gem in eBay... $150 for a used 85/1.4 would be sweet!

If you need autofocus, then of course the 85/1.8 is a better deal. But there's no doubt that, optically, the Samyang outperforms it. The bokeh in particular is smoother and nicer, and it doesn't have the bucketload of CA the Canon has(which of course is correctable).

Considering you're using a Rebel I'd recommend the 85/1.8, as focusing the Sammy may prove to be a pain.

That might not be practical when shooting handheld. But if it's not a problem then by all means get the Samyang.

By the way I just got back from a portrait shoot, and I must say that the veiling flare this lens produces wide open is just marvellous! I used it without hood on purpose just to get the effect :P

Just to tease you(crosspost from here)

All at f/2.8, flash through umbrella. Reflector used in #1 #2. So sharp you could cut yourself!

C&C is welcome!
EDIT: I cut down the sharpening when resizing down a bit.
