amazon has the Vanguard Alta Plus 264AT Alluminum Tripod with SBH-50 Ball Head.

i really can't afford anything more, and i'm wondering if it is good enough to support a prosumer DSLR, 70-200 telephoto, and flash?

or will i have to upgrade to something more heavy-duty?

You could probably do better for that money with a Manfrotto tripod and head. Others here will suggest models.

Also, read this thread for some facts about tripods.

Read the stickey above as well on tripods.

Yes, Vanguard is good quality. I use a 264AP to support a 5D II or 7D with either a 70-200L II or 100-400L.

I have the Alta Pro 283CT and really like it. It is very sturdy, has a neat feature where you can swing the center column to any horizontal angle, and just seems to work well. What I can't tell you is how it will hold up long term, as I have only been using it for about six months now.
