Custom WB

Im trying to work out the best method to obtain a custom WB on my 450D, i was told that you can just focus on a white object and press and hold the WB button to set a custom WB tho i have seen nothing about this option so unsure if it is indeed true.
Other than that, when settin a custom WB what mode should i be shooting in to obtain the image?

Take a picture of the white object, recording it to the memory card. You then use that picture to get the custom WB information from. Repeat for different environments.

Not with a Canon (AFAIK). There are some other brands that do that.

Any mode. Any P.S. except Mono. Any WB.
