Just got a Sigma 150-500os and went down to Wind & Sea to try it out. I was pretty stoked though I need to work on my technique a bit, these were hand held.

Too bad #2 is out of focus, I like the composition with spray & rider. Did percentage of out of focus shots seem high? The others look nice. What type of shutter speeds where you using?

I agree about #2 and I sharpened in PP as much as I could. Shutter was 1/640 which at 500mm is definitely not fast enough..os or no os.
It was my first day with the lens and it was all hand held and just wheeling around and firing.
I think I need to play with zone AF point as well for fast moving targets and slowing down the AF rate. I was in single point and fast AF so it was jumping all over the place.

I will do some tests on the tripod to try and simplify the equation and bump up the ISO and shutter next time.

Still a really fun lens.

Thanks to Tubarao for selling it to me. :)

I like the composition on #2 as well. It's too bad about the focus though. I've been dabbling with some surf photography around San Diego as well. But I'm lacking the reach with just a 200/2.8L on my T2i. I shoot hand held with at least 1/1000 speed and single point AF usually.

Cool alpharon...That is s nice lens.

My previous longest lens was the 55-250is so the jump up is huge in reach, weight, quality and required skill.
I think I was just so excited to be shooting with it I was not thinking clearly.
I could easily have gotten away with much higher ISO and bumped the shutter speed.

yes play with a higher shutter around 1000-1500 and AF point, for wake boarding i like to use center or bottom Zone AF

@MMURD, if you want to get some practice in tomorrow, there's an open competition in Pacific Beach. North side of Crystal Pier. http://yfrog.com/f/j3ftvjj/ (external link) I just found out about it. I think I might take the fam out there to check it out.

For wakeboarding, I use the top focus point, therefore the rider is at the top of the frame and shows the height from which he launched off of the wake.

Just my opinion.
Cool shots thought!

Alpharon - The 200/2.8L would work well on the inside at W&S and was amazed at how many punts and airs the guys were pulling off.

Mmurad - #2 is awesome and a bummer it was out of focus.
