I never knew that smething this big could fly almost as slowly as a Storch!

Quick question. Is it the direction of the light or something else that makes it look like there's no prop in some shots? Thanks :)

Nice series.

Is it the direction of the light or something else that makes it look like there's no prop in some shots?

Reflections from the sun will help, as well as the material it's made of. Jay had a wallhanger posted recently with a wooden prop.

These things are incredibly slow. Watch this one at Hittnau earlier in the year, and take-off was unbelievable. Not so much acceleration, more anti-gravity drive :-) It just raised the tail and then was climbing ever soooooooo slowly.
Nice pics.

This one is best IMO good backdrop if Queen Elizabeth Castle but could benefit from straighting the horizon ;)

Yes, they can fly oh so slowly. I think it was at JIA2009 they had one fly to a stop ~ perfectly still in the sky :D

As for the props blur, I would think a slower shutter was desirable???

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Props need light too... ;)

The catch is that the pitch of the prop doesn't always lend itself to a good angle of incidence from your light source.

Hey there, thanks :) I think the horizon is straight - rather difficult to see TBH. Don't think I could really have got away with a lower shutter speed though! ;)

For a four bladed prop, I'd say your shutter speed is just fine. I find that when I'm shooting a plane going away from the sun, the prop at times can be difficult to see, and as with some of my air to airs this weekend, some of the propellor blades are barely visible, while flying in the direction of the sun can give some excellent lighting on the props.
