What to buy next, 5D II or 24L II

Don't necessarily be so quick to sell your Tamron; that is one jewel of a lens, and is on par with the Canon 24-70. Plus it weighs less!

I like the Tamron a lot and will probably keep it. I have always heard new glass before new body, why not get the lens first then the camera later?

How do you get the Canon Loyalty thing?

Even with the rockbottom 5d2 price through the CLP, I'm not sure I could convince myself to buy the 5d2 now when it's widely rumored that the 5d3 will premier in March

So would you get the 24L II or wait for the 5D III and maybe get that, i have been hearing late next year, when did you hear March?

Rumors are rumors, nothing more but mere speculation. Up until a few months ago people were holding off buying a 24-70 because an IS version would most definitely be announced at the Photokina....

Next to that, even IF a new 5D is announced, the 5DII is still a great camera. The next version would be way more expensive and over budget for OP.

To stay on topic: I recently sold my 40D and lenses for a 5DII and ZE 50 f/2 and couldn't be happier. The jump in IQ and high ISO performance is amazing, I would definitely go for the gear shuffle and FF upgrade.

5D2 would be a huge upgrade from your 40D, get it first, sell your other stuff then get the 35L instead.

Get the 5D2, sell or trade the 10-22 to a 17-40L. Sell the Sigma 30 and pick up a 50 f/1.4

I am looking at either the 24L II or 5D II and in a real bind and not sure which to get next. I can get the 5D II through the Canon loyalty program for $1690 or buy the 24L for about $1500. I like shooting landscapes, mostly on a tripod, and my kids and their sports. My current gear is listed below. I do not find my 40D lacking but would like to upgrade to FF sometime, just not sure if that should be now.

I don't use the 24L II as much as I'd like, it's not for sale though

I do not take the tripod if I am just walking around, I try to use the tripod when I can, especially in the evening.

fast lens like 24L1.4II has got capabilities that zoom doesn't have ... like a very good colors depth, isolation power combine with a rather smooth bokeh, very good micro contrasts.

So i would say that even with a tripod, it can also be interesting to add ND filters and play wide open with long shutter speed.

I wouldn't expect a new 5D3 until early 2012 at the very least. This is MY opinion av-course, but, there will not be a 5D3 until Nikon pushes out a new update for the D700. A Canon 5D3 will FOLLOW after the release of Nikon's update to there D700. There is also the fact to consider that the 5D FF series usually waits a good amount time before being released after the new 1Ds gets a refresh. Based on the past, the 5D series usually draws technologies from the newest 1Ds and is introduced pretty much as a watered-down version of the 1Ds, hence, the price difference as well.

Also, consider that the original 5D had a product life cycle of three years. The 5D2 has to have a longer product life cycle before going out.... by my guess close to 4 years.... since the 5D2 came out in late 2008.... that puts it around late 2012 for a new 5D3 by my guess.

^^^ These are just my guesses and assumptions so take them with a grain of salt, but, I think you shouldn't expect a new 5D3 any time soon.

OP I would get the 5D2... its got another couple years left in it before a new king 5D comes out, and enjoy!
