I'm planning on just strapping on my 300 & 500 and a small messenger bag and humping it if I go in on Sat.

I've done it that way too - just don't like bumping them through crowds. I'll see what hey have to say on Friday and then decide what I'm bringing to the show.

Its the guys who've never had authority before that you have to look out for - give them a little and they think they're guarding the President. Just remember to smile - be friendly and just do as you are told. No need to be confrontational - remember who you are dealing with. Most are great folks who try to be helpful... but there's always one in the crowd. Hope you don't find him or her!

Oh and Marc... it may be best to go ahead and shave that beard off and wear your dress turbin both days! They'll leave you alone for sure.:):):)

I'll start shooting weddings when they start holding them on Wednesdays!

Well, we will just bring our messenger bags and if they turn us away I am headed back home or find a place to park and watch.

In 2008 I was carrying a knock-off of the Domke F-2, I got growled at by the 1st level security GDF, and the USAF 2nd level used the full baggage scanner and let me go without a word.

For reference the F-2 (according to B&H) its 16.5 x 9.0 x 9.6" (41.9 x 22.9 x 24.3 cm) (WxDxH)

In NAS Jacksonville a few years ago a had a sheriff (on a golf cart cruising the parking lots) threaten to arrest me with my F-2 while walking to the security screening area because "I must be dangerous". He had me followed by the t-shirt security guy to the line. It was about 800 people- to clear the log jam the Marine Major in charge decided to turn-off the detectors because they were set extremely sensitive and going off constantly causing almost everyone to be wanded bringing the line to a crawl.

This got the line moving again, but as I got up they were starting to turn them back on- the LT waved me around and peeked in my bag, saw the 300L and said hurry off before they notice and bust your chops- snap a few for me.

In NAS Oceana last month I hadn't even shown my media pass before they said go-ahead after opening my large backpack holding the 300, 500, 70-200 and 2 bodies.

My point is they don't have airport style "size-wise" units, large is up to the eye of whatever person has been granted token authority over you. When I am dealing with actual military guards I just ask for the CO/OIC and have never had a problem after a through inspection. In the case of volunteers and GDF-types they are hoping to be the big man on campus by abusing you with it. Remember the most important thing to the people in charge is not actual security, but playing the out the script of security theatre to perfection.

I'm planning on just strapping on my 300 & 500 and a small messenger bag and humping it if I go in on Sat.

Curious, what backpack holds all of this : 300, 500, 70-200 and 2 bodies - thanks

One that you really don't want strapped to your back :D

I bought a Lowepro Photo Trekker AW II Backpack (external link) many years ago. Up until recently it stored less used gear. Since acquiring the 500 f/4L I've used it to carry everything at airshows and races. Accessories that were in there included: sunscreen, TC, CF cards, Monopod, Noise Reducing Active Headphones, Scanner and a few snacks.

All things considered its pretty comfortable, you just need a strong lower back, legs, and feet to carry it for as many miles as you need to hike.

AWESOME Display this afternoon. I was at the empty lot that Marc suggested.

There are some powerlines are a minor issue to deal with, but great location. Fantastic show - for a while I put down the camera and just watched the jets go by.

Back tomorrow for practice day 2.
