Guyz,
I have canon T2i. I wanna know if what i've been doing sometimes could hurt my lens or body.

Sometimes I'm using full manual mode in the camera and kept the lens in AF. The AF on the lens is working giving me perfect focus in well lit environment... is it wrong? Well it hurt my lens or body?

if it's ok then it's really cool. My wife don't know how to use a DSLR but sometimes I'm asking her to take a shot of me and my son. What I'm doing is setup the exposure for her manually and leave the lens in AF so she won't have a hard time focusing. i'll ask her then to press halfway first to achieve focus then all the way. it works also in live view.

please share if you happen to know the asnwers to this question.

thanks.

vinz

Using the camera in Manual mode only affects the shutter speed and aperture. Auto focus is still operated on the half press unless you have turned the switch on the lens to Manual Focus, in which case you will have to twist it yourself.

Correct, manual mode in camera means nothing related to AF, the only thing that affects that AF to be manual or auto is the switch on the lens. If your lens doesn't have a FTM ring, and you try to manually focus the lens while it is in the AF on setting, you may have issues down the road.

I kind of know how to focus manually in the lens... my question is will it hurt my body or lens if i set the body on manual mode and the lens in AF.

i also don't touch the focus ring while in auto.

Sorry i'm new to DSLR, about two months.

maybe i just don't get your answers... newbie here.

thanks

I just do my settings in manual mode to achieve proper exposure and have the lens do the focusing. it works in t2i even in live view. In that case, i never touch the lens focus ring while working.

is this okay?

Yes, camera in manual mode means you are in control of ISO, aperture, and shutter, it won't touch any of those but will tell you via the exposure meter what it thinks of your selection. It will still AF the lens for you though, no issues.

To be clear, if the lens AF switch is on AF then unless it is a Full Time Manual focusing lens like USM lenses, you can't manually focus until you switch it to MF. USM lenses are full time manual focusing so you can focus them anytime.

Manual exposure mode has nothing to do with manual focus.

I think on "L" lenses you can manual focus without switching the lens to MF, but not so on non-L lenses. My 50mm f/1.4 must be switched to MF. Failure to do so could damage the focusing motor.

If I am wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me

You're talking about FTM focusing, which comes standard on ring-type USM canon lens models. Then there are non-ring USM (cheapest USM models) that do not feature FTM.

And yes, attempting to focus a non-FTM lens when engaged in AF mode can have the potential of damaging the lens motor... but you'll notice some fairly heavy resistance, which is a dead giveaway that you shouldn't be turning the focus ring!!!
