Everyone have their own "The Best" so there is no such a thing as the best lens for everyone. Too many variable to determine the best. First it depend on what you shoot then your style. Even if you are just shooting portrait some prefer wide angle and other prefer telephoto. Amount of space to work and where. So many different styles. I prefer 35L and someone else prefer 135L or even 200L f/2 for portrait. Someone else may even prefer 400L for portrait.

So I can sell it and retire.

You can retire on $120k? Thats pretty impressive as most jobs can make that in excess of basic living 2-6 years... Guess you won't be working till you are 70 or so =P

lol, great thread. It's like saying you want to build something and you can only have one tool.

What do you want to build....what do YOU want to shoot?

The 3 sharpest from Canon are the 200 2L, 300 2.8L and the 400 2.8L.

I prefer the 200 2L and thats based on its a more useable focal length for me.

The question come's from my kid, that wondered if the 24-70 was the BEST lens that could be bought to a camera. So i said its maybe the best in this range, but that was not the answer he wanted. So he asked again if it was the best lens. Thats why i ask this "easy" question. If anybody can answer this question it's you guys out ther on this forum. :)

No such thing. There will always be compromises made with each lens made to achieve a certain and very specific goal. Each will excel at that goal and be "okay" for the others...

Very true, added to which one particular lens wouldn't take every type of picture.

When I think of whats epic from Canon I think of their super telephoto line and the 85mm f/1.2

I think the 24-105 f4L IS, gives you zoom a fixed aperture, it is the best walk around lens, sharp good IQ. All around a pretty versatile lens, good on a FF or crop body.

If there was a truly "best" lens, Canon wouldn't be manufacturing it's current pile of Sh!tty lenses, now wouldn't they? (just kidding)

but how about a 9.3-930mm f/1.7? http://www.canon.com …ucts/index_digi100af.html (external link)
It doesn't cover 35mm fullframe, but damn if that isn't extreme.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

If the answer is a yes or no question then the answer is going to be NO for any lens. It may be good for what it does, but it is going to suck for a lot of other things.

The best lens is....

The 12mm to 1,200mm f/2 IS. It is only 6 inches long and only weighs 10 ounces...

"No such thing!" you say!

Well I guess then, that there is no such ting as the BEST LENS from Canon!
