The tube splits on the 700DX? I though that was only a feature of the smaller 300 series models. The center column on my 700DX definitely does not split.

It's very hard to see when you don't know it's there. I didn't notice it until I read the instruction it came with. Mine has it, maybe a older version didn't include this feature?
Picture below shows the split in the tube

Interesting. They must have changed it on more recent models. I have pictures of mine in this thread.

Yeah, different color also.
They must have figured that it would be nice to just include it instead of trying to get as many pennys out of people as possible, kinda like the same way Canon doest give you a lens hood when you buy a expensive lens.

I think yours is actually missing the lower part of the center tube, it normally extends to the end of the foam grips.

Not true...every "L" lens comes with its own hood... ;)

That's the optional short center column in my pictures, except the one where it is fully extended - that's the original center column.

I think they changed to the split normal column in 2008.

I had decided on the Slik 700DX for over a month now - just deciding on other equipment before I place an order.

I think this tripod is great for tall, strong people (me) who are beginners in photography. The head is good for video and a nice ball head can be added for a perfect value setup.
