Spotted a shieldbug sitting on a pear leaf in the garden. Managed to cut the leaf off and put it on a sunchair for easier shooting without disturbing the shield bug at all. Did some focus stack sequences and then it lowered it's proboscis and started blowing bubbles for me. Not seen a shieldbug do this before.
It was returned to the pear tree after still sitting on it's leaf.
All shots focus stacked using zerene stacker

The first thing that awed me when I opened this page was the colors. Then your usual sharp detail. Very nice. I see a drop under his belly. Was he excreting from there, or just storing it? Also more bubbles on the leaf under him. And, a white smear under his face, on the leaf. These shots all ask more than they answer.

The most astounding thing though, is the proboscis, it's just a sheath for his butterfly like tongue. Amazing. :)

Thanks for the comments all - appreciated :)

Toby - not just those with a proboscis- crickets do it and i think wasps have been caught at it as well.

Canonloader - not quite sure what it was doing but I never actually saw it either drop a drop or suck it back in. I'm fairly sure though that the other drops are where it has dropped them. I might have been upsetting it of course with all the flashing.

What an amazing set of shots - both the clarity and what its actually doing.

I was thinking exactly the same as Mitch about the other drops - fascinating stuff - it certainly makes a Shield Bug more interesting lol.
