I have tried shooting outerspace but light pollution and funky work schedules cause problems so I have started to think about shooting inner space, I have thought about getting a microsope.

I would like something that I can hook my camera up to and take photos (or videos!) give me quality views, something that is NOT going to put a huge hole in my pocket book, but something that is not super cheap you can buy at walmart. Perhaps in the 500.00 - 1,000 range. Possible targets:

Bugs
Snow flakes
Salt crystals
grass blades / leafs

Any suggestions?

Talk to the nice staff at B & H or Adorama (both will be closed Saturday) I'm sure that there is something which would work.

Talk to Canonloader and look up some of his previous posts. He's been shooting and posting some pretty informative threads lately on microphotography. He's talked about his setup several times. Post something in the micro talk forum too if you haven't already, you might get more info from guys that don't venture out of the macro forums much :D.

Helen wouldn't something like http://www.adorama.com/BAAY11234.html (external link) be a better option, yes it would require a camera mount (c mount?) but it should have better optics, allow for the use of a better camera and is within the OP's stated budget.

Went and had a chat with our 'scopes expert; the microscopes we carry, have an internal digital camera or you can add a low cost 2.1 meg .web cam type. They are not set up for Digital SLR type cameras. eg
