So how did the airshow go? Were bags an issue?

I'm wondering how the in and out of the airshow experience operated this year... I'll try and get my shots from the past two days up tomorrow.

The weather was perfect for the show. I managed to get everything i needed into a vest so I did not have a bag so I am not sure how much of an issue it was. There were signs everywhere saying "no backpacks".

In and out was a different story although not as bad as the 2008 show. Bring plenty of patience. We parked at Lockheed. Got there about 8:45 and it was after 10 when we finally made it into the show. Out was just as bad. No well defined lines to get to the buses and no way to tell which line you were in until someone walked around telling everyone where your bus line was going. I saw many people stand in a line for 30+ minutes only to find out they were in the wrong line.

Yeah, getting out took a long time. We were in a huge line that was apparently feeding only one bus. But there was a least 12 other buses. The other line they said was for Jim Miller park, then later it changed to Lockheed. When I got up to the buses I noticed that other line was feeding like 5-6 buses. Really poor organization there, but what can you do with such a huge crowd? Once we got back to Lockheed there was little to no traffic. Getting in was almost painless - we got there at 7AM and stood in line for about an hour. We got on the first bus in and secured some good front row seats along the fence. Later we realized we should have picked show left instead of show right.

It was a great show although not the greatest for photography. Shooting in the sun all day and dealing with lots of smoke (and no wind) made for a lot of bad shots. I had fun with the rented 100-400L and just might buy one someday. I'm hoping for a new version in the next year. My wife is in love with the 70-200L f//2.8. Today we're headed to the zoo since we still have another day with our long lenses before they go back tomorrow. I don't know when I'll get around to sorting through the 2252 photos I took at the air show (three 16GB card and two 4GB cards totally full!).

Sounds like a carbon copy of today re transportation. Got to carpark approx 6pm after show finished 4:10pm. Home in 10 mins inc drive thru for dinner.

I thankfully was show left - but they had all sorts of crap between us and the flight line for most of the show- why is there a semi-truck parked on the grass between the apron and runway??? Right in my sight line to the touchdown points. Thankfully they were all gone for the blue show - but would have like to gets some better shots of the snowbirds.

I only got 1200 or so photos - and some are bound to be bad - as I got some crap in my shooting eye about 1/2 way through the blue angels sequence. Shooting left eyed, while keeping normal one shut hoping the weeping will get whatever went in there out (it didn't). Only hit one kid in the head with the lens when panning, and panned into the sun once....

Now the sorting/deleting/exposure correction begins...

Daniel

It wasn't that bad yesterday.. maybe it's because i got there early. I arrived at the Lockheed parking lot at around 7:05ish~. Got on line and the security start letting us onto the buses at 8am.

Me and couple of other SPS members roped off a little spot for us exclusively on the show left, shooting into the sun was a bummer... especially when you pan with a plane going towards the sun.. It's blindingly bright.

I took a total of 1433 exposures yesterday. After deleting OOF/ blurred/ cut off/ duped shots. I end up with 153 usable shots. Pretty good IMO.

Heres a few from yesterday.

After a quick sort through - a lot of crap, a lot of missed focuses, and a lot of 'great shot - shame I cut the wing/tail/some part of the plane off', followed by great photo with a speaker right in the middle...

Heres a couple that stand out so far...

Nice shots! I know what you mean after finally sorting through my photos last night. I immediately deleted half of my 2252 photos. Those dang speakers on either side of me, and why on earth have a porta-potty between the people and the runway? I also wish they wouldn't park a bunch of stuff all around the taxiways. I am down to about 300 photos, with lots of dupes, that need further scrutiny. Overall I am disappointed with my shots, but I guess I can't expect much for my first time shooting an air show. The 5D MKII seems too slow for this sort of thing. I am much more comfortable with a waterfall or a landscape scene where I can take my time. But at least I think I gained some experience that will help a great deal for the next air show. Might have to make a trip to Pensacola next year!

I got to the show on friday early enough to pick up my media pass and then was led into the base and parked under the tower. Sat and Sun were different - where i had to come in from the Windy Hill gate and park over behind the statics by the Snowbirds.
I carried in my Lowepro backpack and the Lightware 500 case and they searched both and let me through - no big deal. The media pass didn't seem to matter for security and I was good with that.

We pretty much had to shoot to the right of the Airboss show center in front of the fence and yes - the Blue Angels always park their vehicles in the way - at every show. Plus they put the helicopter, Stearman and Cub out there in the way too. Way too much crap for low passes.
Lighting was bad all three days and would have been better from the Lockheed side - but Lockheed doesn't allow cameras of any sort over there.
I shot about 3000 pics each day - so I have a lot to go through, shooting with a 1DmkIV + 1.4 + 500, 1DmIII + 1.4 + 300 2.8, and the 5DmII + 100-400.
Yes the 5DmII seemed terribly slow after shooting with the other two bodies.

I've just scratched the surface and on Sunday I shot the 1DmIV +2x +500 all hand held and still came away with a good keeper rate. Well over 50% or more so far.
Here are five...

Overall - very pleased with the keeper rate and results -it was a normal air show - as these things go. Only two weeks to get the rest done since Ft. Worth Alliance air show is at the end of the month and its three days of shooting all over again plus an air to air mission or two. Life is good!

I'll start shooting weddings when they start holding them on Wednesdays!

As FYI, the Harvest Balloon Festival was nice. I don't think you could ask for much better weather to do balloon launches. A friend of mine was crewing for one of the balloons, so I was able to get in close to their balloon. I even went on the "chase" the second morning.

The "glow" event that night was packed since they'd had a festival with lots of activities for kids, and not all balloons participated in the glow. They were also scattered around a few places, so no one spot could see all of them. Still, it was nice, and I'm glad I got to go.

Here are a few shots from that event.

Great photos! I saw one balloon up in the air as we were coming into Buford on our way back from the air show. I'm looking forward to the Anderson, SC balloon event in early November.

That looks like the balloon I was hanging around this weekend! Was that form Saturday or Sunday? If you saw one of them, you should have seen more. They were up in the air between about 8-8:15AM to about 9:AM both mornings, give or take 15 mins or so. From what I saw Sunday, there was usually more than one in a given area except for one balloon which decided to go up & away from the rest, but it was a red, white & blue one.

Tim, how big is the event in SC?

BTW, I'm digging folks' shots from the airshow at Dobbins. I kinda sorta drove past there Saturday late morning, but there was no decent place to park on the side roads. There were too many folks for my taste after going to the balloon festival so I didn't stop. I'll get to an airshow sometime soon. (Marc, that was me that hollered at you from the green car Saturday. I can't believe I saw you!):)
