looking up doesn't work from me I feel that theres something on her hat and I'm trying to find it too. Cropping would help, get rid of all that space above her head she's too centered in the piture.

Thanks for the CC. Of the shots I got, I thought this one looking up was the cutest and most whimsical. As far as the crop goes, I'm still learning - I was thinking I needed to give her space to look into but I agree about the excessive overhead space. Is this better?

Looking good. On most portraits the eyes are 1/3rd of the way down.

Also there is some tangency issues with the back of her hat. Either crop it off or give it more space. It really can be distracting with that tiny space there, be aware of your edges. :) Nice shot tho mate.

I would have never thought of that! Anybody have a recommendation on a good book about composition?

I don't know of any books on composition but I am sure there are some. More important than composition is emotion. Whether you shoot for you or for paying clients it is the emotion that sells the photo, NOT the composition. A technically sound photo with no emotion is NOT a good photograph. But an emotional photo with bad compostion will still appeal to people. Since we have no emotional ties to the person in the image the technical things jump out as us. For you, the "...I thought this one looking up was the cutest and most whimsical." says it all. This one evoked emotion in you and that is why you like it, regardless of the technical "faults".

While it is fine to strive for technical perfection, keep striving to find that emotion in your subjects that people are looking for first and foremost. Let the technical side be a compliment.
