Cool, not to much then. I'm just trying to get SOOC photos, 1) i'm not keen on PP'ing, and 2) while i'm away travelling (4 months), I won't have photoshop to edit them. So If I can get a good % of photos I like, unedited i'll be happy. If its just basic PS stuff it isn't to bad, can be done when i'm back.

Mind me asking what camera your using? Cheers for the reply. :)

7D with a wack of old mf lens not including the one on the camera and a few left in the bag

i've never seen that lens before! I don't think it's adaptable to 5Ds though w/o hacksawing it.

Couple new ones with my new Nikkor 35/1.4 AI -

f/2, I think -

Either f/1.4 or f/2 -

In the "Is it sharp?" category - 100% crop from a portrait that my wife didn't like -
f/2 or 2.8, don't remember. Standard LR3 'Sharpening - Wide Edges (faces)' applied.

Great thread, I wonder how I've managed to miss it. I've owned a Canon DSLR for about two years now, and have been using some of my mf lenses with it for almost that long. Btw, if you're really into this sort of thing, and for all I know, it's been mentioned in this thread more than once -- but no way am I gonna go back and read through 105 pages to see if it has -- there's a site out there dedicated to the use of mf lenses on DSLRs:

http://forum.mflenses.com/index.php (external link)

It's a cool site, and I visit it regularly.

So anyway, I have LOTS of photos that I can show off here, so the question is, "Where to begin?" Well, I think I'll begin with a lens that is one of my favorites, the Tamron 52B, or the SP 90mm f/2.5 macro. Its sharpness is simply incredible.

Here's the image. Canon XS (1000D), ISO 100, pop-up flash, lens aperture set to f/8.

And the 100% crop:

Note the faint sparkle of spider web just to the left of the rose bud.

Okay, we all know that Canon's old FD line of lenses can't be used with EOS cameras without substantial sacrifices, right? One of the sacrifices is that, if you use a glassless adapter, you lose infinity focus. Ha! You don't just lose infinity focus. You lose just about all of the focal range. Macro works pretty well though, so that's what I did.

I selected one of my favorite lenses for this demonstration: a Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 SSC Aspherical. The 85/1.2 Aspherical was the forerunner to the 85/1.2L lenses, and lots of folks who have had a chance to sample them all claim that this original model is the best of the lot. Here it is mounted to my Original F-1:

IMAGE: http://michaelmcbroom.com/images/canon_f-1_85mm_front.jpg

So I removed the glass element from my FD-EOS adapter which allows infinity focus, and mounted the adapter and 85/1.2 to my XS. What I found was I had a focal range of somewhere between 10" and maybe 18" with the aperture wide open. So one loses a lot more than infinity focus with this lens. And I decided that I would shoot with it wide open, not stopping it down at all. Depth of field is razor thin at f/1.2 and focusing can be a real challenge with my cheezy little XS.

Here's the full image. Gotta love this lens's bokeh. Canon XS, ISO 100, shutter speed unrecorded, but aperture was f/1.2.

And the 100% crop.

FD to EOS

As mentioned cooltouch's post above, if it doesn't have glass in it then it is basically a short macro extension tube and you will be limited to close-up photography.

On the other hand, if it does have glass in it then the IQ will probably go south because none of them use glass that is of high quality.
