Edited long after the fact (4/9/2011): It took me a long time to determine what was wrong, but the lens was defective. I ended up sending it to Canon repair and they replaced the autofocus board. With the cost of the repair, taxes and shipping I have another $350 into this lens. So with what I paid plus the cost of repair I am only about $200 short of the cost of a brand new lens.
