I can't go Thursday. Took off work Friday to attend. Probably won't go Saturday due to the crowds.

Really, crowds? A normal ticket is $50 each, unless you pre-register early.

Last year I thought it was pretty crowded on Friday.

Does anyone actually pay the $50? I assumed everyone registered ahead. Even with the preregistration over, there are still ways to get free tickets.

Need some help from Nick or Mihait......Windows 7 question.

I think my motherboard is fired. I believe I have an OEM copy of Windows 7 home full version. Can I still activate my Win7 with a new motherboard? I read that you can't if the motherboard is a different model. Thanks.

you should be able to activate it online, and if not, you should be able to call microsoft for the new activation code.

if you replace the failed MB with a similar one, you should have no problems.

My fired one is more than 5 years old, Asus P5B. Kind of hard to get the same model. Can I call them anyway and to explain my situation. From what I have found out so far, MS will reactivate my copy regardless.

Thanks.

Have another question about restoring an image of Windows 7 on a new motherboard. Would it work given that the chipset is different or would Windows 7 try to detect the hardware change and use the right driver for it? I really don't want to reinstall Windows 7 again.

Thanks.

if it doesn't have the drivers, you will have to install them manually. it's not the best solution, but it may just work.

You might be able to. Then again, swapping out a Mobo might be too much of a change. I've done this with other OSes with mixed results.

Agreed. But at this point why not consider buying an entirely new outfit. p5B? What does that run, like a Pentium 4?

You can call them. Do you have all the key/codes from your OEM packaging. They will ask you for some code from that.

It depends on what chipset. It might have the drivers already, but it really shouldn't matter. You can go to the Mobo's website and download drivers and install them yourself. No problem. Though I would recommend doing a clean install...

Well, I am so behind with PC technology that all current mainstream motherboards only use DDR3. I am stuck with 4gb of DDR2 and so I picked up a Asus P5kpl, a micro ATX board. with integrated everything. Strangely, online activation went well. I have an OEM Windows 7 Home full version. I can't understand why I didn't need to call. It was a simple swap too. Never thought of swapping the motherboard could be this easy....:)

Probably because it you went from Asus to Asus and they had similar chipsets?

Not even close. One is based on the Intel G31 chipset with integrated video. The P5B uses the P965 chipset.

Then I guess there's a threshold on how many things you can change before you have to re-activate. Mobo counts as one perhaps and maybe not enough to trigger it.

I think the motherboard alone is sufficient. Not just that, since the network card and the sound card are all built-in, they count as another hardware changes. Maybe because I didn't reinstall Windows 7 and that's why it didn't cause a red flag. I just let the OS to re-detect everything. Clearly, what I did it won't appear I am installing the same copy of Windows 7 on another system.
