So I just thought you might find this story a little interesting.......

So my neighbour is a cameraman for a network here in Canada, he shoots the on scene news stuff. One day he comes home, and I see him in the drive way bringing his camera from the van into the house. He puts in down in the driveway and we have a little chat.

I look at his camera and ask if I can take a look at it. It's a nice looking Sony. I pick it up and start messing around with it, he tells me it records directly onto blue-ray cartridges, which I thought was cool. I played with the zoom a little, the playback, and put it down.

As our conversation continued I tried to price a rig like that in my head. I think 10k, 12k? It is professional after all. So I ask him how much. $80,000 he tells me! The camera body is 25k, the lens is 35k, the LCD screen is 12k, and the wireless link dealio is 8k. Now I'm glad I din't drop it!

Obviously gear like this is company provided, but next time I complain about consumer level prices, I'll try and remember that.

I have no knowledge to share, nor questions to ask. I just enjoy reading the posts. I am a semi-professional lurker on many, many boards. I didn't get a pic, but when I see him with it again, I will.

You have no knowledge to share, so you keep quiet?!! What the hell kind of philosophy is that?!!

If everyone here did that, this place would be a wasteland!!!

Oh there are plenty enough people here that keep it interesting enough in my opinion.

Be sure that when the day comes I can't figure out how to do something, and the search button fails me, I shall post again.

Yeah, its pretty price. But the really higher end higher res camera have always been this expensive. The wireless link is fantastic but out the the price range for alot if not all hobbyists.

Still if you need that equipment it sure is nice.

A Formula 1 car is a bit pricey, too. But you don't need one to go to the supermarket. For that, a Chevy will do.

Driving in circles in Indianapolis is a different story.

Sounds like a RED. Expensive cameras but seem to me to be ULTRA nice.

Maybe in my next lifetime when I am a ultra millionaire I will have one.

Stories like this make me glad that I am into photography and not videography....although the video capture mode on the new digital cameras is blurring that line.

Price sounds about right.

The so-called "hard cameras" used to cover sports (the ones say at high home in baseball or on the 20/50/20 yard lines for football) run well north of $150,000 for body, lens, pan head and sticks.

All up, mobile broadcast units cost roughly $10 to $30 million dollars to build.
