Would be very appreciative if someone who owns a 50d could help.
Was giving a photo lesson today eplaining different C.fn's, and after some time i realized that the student's 50D would not AF in Liveview mode with the shutter button HALF pressed, only AF-ON button yields AF results.

The problem is i dont know if the 50D even can focus with the shutter button in LV, hence if you own one, id be gratefull if you could tell me.
Resetting the C.Fn's, changing battery or even lens did not work.

Is this normal? The shutter button works perfectly fine half and full-pressed when shooting through the VF.

Did you try the AF On button to focus? I don't know if you can focus with the shutter button in LV with the 50D.

And honestly, I think that's a good thing!

The af-on button works. I just dont know IF the 50d even CAN focus in LV with the shutter button.

Just tried it on my 50D, it does not focus with the shutter button pressed halfway, it only activates the IS on my 24-105mm lens. AF-On focuses it however.

While in live view mode you can focus using the AF-ON button. The mirror releases, it focuses, and then the mirror returns to live view. You may have already discovered that by now.
