Do you carry your body and lens attached or separate?

For as long as I could remember I always carry my camera with the lens attached. Unless it's a spare body or really tight for space, I like to have the camera with the lens on, just to save a few seconds. But always ran into a problem that many bags don't hold a body with lens attached that well and the ones that do, they are extremely deep (especially backpacks).

After considering a new bag with lower profile, like the ThinkTank UD60, the camera would only fit without the lens attached. Considering the size and space savings, have most photographers carry their camera body without the lens or not? Figuring not only space savings, it's less stress on the lens mount?

Depends on wich bag/ gear i take.
If i need to cram as much as possible into 1 Lowepro flipside 300, the gripped 7D with a 70-200 fits in the main compartment, and with some repositioning of teh seperators i can cram another body, and 2-3 lenses in it.
So in essence theres always at least 1 camera with a lens mounted for quick extraction and capture, and the rest is stowed away ala tetris.

I only have 3 lenses and 2 bags, both have been configured so that I always have my 70-300mm VR mounted on the camera.

i carry mine with lens attached all the time. its a big time saver for me. the only time my camera is without lens is when i'm about to change lenses.

Both bodies with lenses attached for what I think (hope!) I'll need.

BUT, if travelling with both bodies, the 30D goes sideways in my Flipside 300 with body-caps, just to save space...while the 7D would still be ready to shoot.

I always have my 70-200 attached when in the bag. The segments are set up this way to utilize the space to it's maximum.

Separate. I usually don't know what lens I am going to start with. Also packs better. For those rare moments I am just going to be walking around with a camera, I don't bring a bag. I'll just walk out with the camera on my shoulder with whatever lens I think I will want to use.

I rarely, if ever, carry a body with no lens mounted.

Apart from simple convenience I always try to change lenses in a windless and as dust free environment as possible, this typically means only rarely once I leave the house/hotel as the world wont stay still much. Probably not an issue if you only shoot indoor, but that's rare for me.

Definately always carry my 50D lensed up, so if something catches my eye its extracted out of the bag and ready to go. My reasoning is that whatever you may be trying to shoot could have changed before you've had a chance to extract body and lens and joined them to shoot.
More so now I only use one lens, meaning no need to keep body and lens seperate.

I do both. Normally the cameras are sitting in the bag with some lens attached. However, if I am traveling to some destination and packing all my gear then I usually configure my bags for lenses and bodies separate. This allows me to pack in nearly everything.

That's interesting. You mean that you would think twice before chaning your lens outdoors even if you think a shot would be better with a lens that produces "the right" perspective?

I don't bang my stuff around, but I see my camera and lenses as tools, and tools get worn with time...

I have a Lowepro 300 bag and with the few things I have, I pretty much have to have the 70-200 on the body all the time for storage.

It usually depends on what I'm doing. When I travel domestically/internati​onally, lens stay unattached, packed tightly within the bag I'm carrying (backpack/case/etc.).

If I'm going to an event, depending on the equipment I need to bring, this will usually determine what bag I need to bring along with me which will then decide whether I keep the lens attached or not.

The fact of the matter is I have all ThinkTank Gear so I have several options depending on what I need to lug around. When I say I have all ThinkTank Gear, I have pretty much all their equipment that they sell so I'm usually a walking ThinkTank Billboard.

I've done a lot of both, used the TT UD20, 30 and 40 but switched to the Retrospective 10 mostly because I wanted to leave my 85L mounted most of the time and I am liking this much better. That said, I did get the ShapeShifter backpack where the body is not stored with a lens and I'm okay with it so far.
