Going to Hong Kong! Which Set?!

Hey guys,

Well unfortunately, I am not going to Hong Kong. However, my girlfriend is and she wants to bring either the 5DII or the 7D. She feels very comfortable with the 7D because of it's AF points, however, the 5D is better at noise handling and it has a FF sensor so my primes become wider for her.

Between the two of us, we share the following lenses:
24-70L
24L
35L
45mm TS-E
50 f1.4
85L II
135L

She doesnt want to bring the 24-70L because she doesn't like the f2.8 aperture and she finds it to be very heavy (after all, it is named the brick).

So hopefully, you guys can suggest two primes that she can bring to effectively capture her trip. All we know is that she will be going to Disneyland and will be traveling with her cousin who lives there.

I was thinking of encouraging her to bring the 24L and the 50 1.4 on a 7D. I'm just not sure if 38mm (35mm equiv) will be wide enough for her to capture Hong Kong.

I would say 7D + 24L and 85L

I using 7D as well. My last HKG trip. I brought 2 primes lens. They are 24L & 50L. Good enough.

I pretty much did Hong Kong only with a 35mm lens, seemed to work well though, never really had to worry about switching lenses or carrying anything extra. Barely even used flash too, shouldn't bring it next time I go back.

I'd go with this combo as well, even though my preferred travel combo is a 5D2 with 24-105L, 35L and 135L. With your lenses, I'd pick a 5D2, 24-70 and 35L.

Sure would be nice to have an UW in such a crowded location....But, take the 24L (for landscape, since it's the widest you have) and the 85L (for street)

It wouldn't have been for me, but... that's me. I don't even think 38mm would do the view from Tsim Sha Tsui justice. But then again, there's a lot more to HK than the epic vistas.

This one's a toughy - let us know which ones she chooses!

5D2 with 24L and 135L

on my recent trip to hong kong all i brought was my 7d + 35L, there were times when i wished i had something wider.

since you said she feels more comfortable with the 7d, i think bringing 7d + 24L + 85L would be enough.

An UW would be great for HK.

When I travel for fun, I carry two lenses at most. It's usually a zoom and a prime.. and a small tripod. The 24-105L or EF-S 15-85mm really does make a great all-purpose travel lens. She should take the lightest combo - a 5D and the brick. Period. If she wants 2 lenses, then the 24 and 50

I agree with this guy. 24L for the wide stuff, 135L for covert "people on the street" stuff.

Your girlfriend can't decide on her own lenses? It seems like maybe you are trying to be a little too helpful here. I am sure she will pack up the camera gear (if any) that she wants all by herself if you let her.

5D2, 24L only.

Buy a 85/1.8 in HK and sell it back in Canada.

Wouldn't advise on taking the brick. I did 5D2 + 24-70 this summer and it was tough.
