I was out shooting birds and I decided to take a distant handheld shot of Atlantic City from the wild life sanctuary with my 300. I was quite a distant away as you can tell from the atmospheric interference (not sure that's the correct term)

That is a nice photo.
I would think it is more like atmospheric interference. I have a location that I take shots of NYC from. I can see about 18-20 miles distant from the said location. Most all the time, there is the same 'haze' influence in my images.

I was there Turkey day 2009. I wanted to get to Cape May, but the timing was too tight. Didn't realize you were Jersey.
