For the owners of this ballhead out there, I was wondering if your vertical drop notch was at 90 degrees from horizontal. I did purchase a RRS L-plate so it won't really matter, but I was wondering why my drop notch didn't settle at 90 degrees, but more like 93-95 degrees. Wouldn't it be inconvenient for someone to use that drop notch for vertical photography if they didn't have an L-Plate? Perhaps there is a reason for it that I don't see so please enlighten me.

FWIW I have never used the "drop notch" on my Markin Q3T for anything other than angling down low. An L plate is really the only way to go as it keeps the center of the sensor at the same position, whereas using a "drop notch" offsets it.

Yeah that's the reason I got the L-Plate, but I was just wondering why they wouldn't just make the drop notch parallel with the ground lol.

I can get 90 degrees from my M10. And I don't have an L plate, so for lenses without a tripod collar I use it regularly.

Because you might not want to (or be able to) level up the tripod, so giving you a little more room to play with lets you compensate for the tripod not being perfectly vertical.
