OP;
Thanks for posting the info. I picked up a 7D for a great trade-in deal.

Has anyone sent one of these back to canon for sensor cleaning? it looks like mine had more grime on it than I previously thought... even though it only had around 20 clicks when I purchased it. If you sent it in, any idea on the return time?

if you ship it to Canon Repair, they will charge you. sensor cleaning isn't covered under warranty. I had called and asked about it when I got my first 5D II that I had to return for an exchange. there was a lot of dust on the sensor as well as in the viewfinder.

I shipped my camera back to Canon for an exchange and it took over 2 weeks to get a replacement. the replacement had some dust on the sensor, but I have an eclipse kit to take care of it if it really bugs me. it's not noticeable from f.28 to f11-ish, but I don't shoot higher than that anyway.

Just spoke to two reps - one said the 5DII has been discontinued and another said it won't return :/.

Heard the same thing regarding the CLP.... They are still refurb's avail (5d mkii) but not with the 20% -CLP. Seems like they were selling too many CLP....

Nikon D4, Sony RX10, Sony RX100.

they've been doing the CLP for 7 years with different camera bodies. when word spread like wildfire that the 5D II was available, I'm sure they sold hundreds, or maybe even a few thousand bodies in a very short time period. you figure they lose roughly $300 per body through the CLP versus selling it from their website...that adds up.

figure if they sold 500 5D II bodies for $1,599 versus $1,999...that's $200,000 lost profit.

but that assumes those 500 bodies would actually sell in their refurb store...many of those could stay around until refurb prices drop, so the loss in profit is much less...think about it, all the folks in here who missed out on the CLP program aren't running to the Canon refurb store to buy...

very true. no definite answer as to why they removed it. maybe they thought people WOULD run to the refurb store since demand was so high. $1,999 still beats $2,300 especially around the holidays.

maybe their supply was running low...maybe the monkey labor workers went on strike until they got TWO bananas a day...

who knows..

I am just on a holding pattern until (and hopefully) they would add back the 5dii.

My guess is that, with high demand they saw with CLP, they would hope to get that type of sales during holiday season.

Once they realize that they are just sitting on the piles of refurb units (all the returns they will get after holidays), they would add it back to the CLP. Maybe just before x-mas, just to move stuff.

But, I am sure that they would get few more returns, due to whatever reason after holidays of 5dii.

I just need to tell myself to stay calm and play this wait game.

I did thought about 7D, but I don't do so much sports, but a lot of family pics and portraits, I think 5dii will fit my needs better at this time.

I can wait couple more months...maybe another price drop by that time???

if the 5D2 was removed because it was *too* popular, i doubt they'll bring it back *and* drop the price...

So $1600 thru CLP, and $2000 thru Canon refurbish store plus tax? I don't have much waiting time since I've got a wedding to do first week of December. Unless they bring it back within a couple of weeks, I'm going to have to buy a brand new one from Craigslist for $2200 clear. I simply have to drive maybe 20-40 miles to pick this up, new in retail box, non repurbished with zero actuation and US version. Not such a bad deal considering..... But I would rather get one thru the loyalty program. Still have to wait :(

Shoot now, fix later. ;)

shipping label for trade-in camera

Just an FYI, I received my shipping label from Canon yesterday via email for the trade-in. I purchased the 5D on October 30th, so for those of you who did not get your return labels for the trade-in I would check your emails now.

Cheers!
