Exactly as tkbsic said. I was already at ISO 800 and down to 1/50 on the shutter and had to use f/2.8, (a very narrow DOF at that distance with a 50mm lens) to get proper exposure.
My focus point was on the young lady's right eye to try to get most of what was in the frame in focus.
As tkbsic stated, shifting to f/5.6 for the shot would have gotten more of the guy in focus. Indoors with available light using f/5.6 in this case would have meant much higher ISO or even slower shutter speed. As mentioned in my original post with pic, shooting at 1/50 was amazingly sharp for me!
Another option was to have the guy lean forward toward the lens a bit to pick up some focus. Lots of options and with more experience, I'll get better! The shot was just a snap as the kids were heading out the door from a family birthday gathering.
