Just did a successful DIY AF repair on a 50 1.4 I bought off here for $200. I'm psyched. Photos coming soon!

Did you follow the link posted above? Or another source? Give out some details -- this is a problem that does crop up occasionally!

I used the link above. The link has another link with the step by step instructions. The only thing it fails to mention is a dab of glue on the one ribbon you have to disconnect and the small piece of metal with 6 small prongs that sticks pretty good and I almost sent flying into the abyss of my messy bedroom. Be careful with that thing!

Oh and I almost stripped a lot of screws, taking them out. Watch out for the tight ones.

Taken with 5D2, in raw mode. No sharping in PS.
It's a tiny bit soft wide open (still acceptable), yet it is razor sharp f2.0 onwards. I love the light weight of this lens, too! I put it in my bag all the time with my 5D2 as a very nice snaps tool.

This lens is really a gem! I love it!

I agree. This lens is soft but acceptable wide open. I have to admit that after I sent my 50 to Canon for calibration it came back super sharp :D I also always have this lens in my bag due to its light weight. I might not even touch it during a shoot but I don't have a reason not to carry it. When the cash comes in, I think I'm going to sell this lens and get a 35L.

These were pre-calibration:

I'm also planning to buy the 35L by the end of this month! I just hope that the 50 1.4 could be a little more solid built. The more you shoot with prime, the lesser you would like to use a zoom! :o

Your photos are very nice indeed!

I thought one had to sharpen in pp when shooting in raw? Maybe that's why most people find this lens soft (and other lenses!) because their images are 'sooc no sharpening'? Correct me if i'm wrong though... Maybe people that don't pp would have better results in jpeg ;). To prove my point, in LR3 switch between 'library' and 'develop' on a raw image, the develop mode adds +25 sharpening automatically (i think) and it makes a HUGE difference. This is similar to what the in camera processing does to a jpeg sharpening wise so its not 'over sharpening' or anything.

First one's at f1.4 and second is at f2. F2 should be noticeably sharper with this (And pretty much every f1.4) lens

That's a minor detail  My mistake. Regardless, its still way sharper at f/1.4. I'll see if I can get another shot similar to those two wide open.

Calibration was free because its still under warranty. I adjusted the tonal curves and unmasked the sharpening (to 70). I left the sharpness at 25, which is the way LR imports RAW files.

Its a noticeable improvement regardless of the above statement about aperture.
