Best sub-$300 zoom lens

Just curious on what everyones opinion is on the best sub-$300 zoom lense. I'm new to photography and would like to add another zoom lens to my bag. All I currently have is the 18-55 kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8. I'm looking for something longer than my 18-55 if possible. Thanks.

There isn't much in that price range. The Canon EF-S 55-250 is the complement to your kit lens and is pretty good, especially considering the price.

I'd have to go with the Canon 55-250. Very nice lens for the $$. Not blazingly fast but optically it's very nice.

Just getting started, I dont have the money and think I should learn a little more before I get a L lens or a higher end EF-S lens.

The 55-250 is neither. Its the companion lens to the 18-55 and very reasonably priced.

then a used (but well cared for) Canon 55-250 is your best bet

+1 on the 55-250. Very sharp, and good compliment to your existing set-up. Although it is not the fastest for the price it is an excellent buy!

Yeah, I know. I should have been more clear. I would really like the 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8 but they are too expensive and would like something to increase my focal range until I can afford one of them. I will look into the 55-250.

Do you want them because you actually need them, or do you want them because of gear envy?

Well ,I'm taking vacations this January and July and would like the ability to zoom closer to things. I would also like to start taking portraits of my family and while the 50mm is nice, I would like something in the 85mm+ range for them.

That's fine, but does any of that require the L lenses you're wanting, with your lack of experience? Do not fall into the trap of "if I buy an L-series lens, my photos will come out perfect." Go over here & check out what the humble 55-250 is capable of.

OK, 55-250mm will be the best choice with that budget.

Heh, I think you got your answer, the 55-250 is the natural complement to you kit.

I checked out the lens in the photo sample section and the pictures it takes look great. I am going to pick up this lens and see what kind of stuff I can snap on vacation. Thanks for leading me in the right direction.

Yes, the 55-250 is your only choice here really. It's superior to everything in that price range.
