Hi
Does anyone use auto iso?
I shot a airsoft game for a m8 and used my 70-200 at shutter speed 250 and f4, because we were in the woods etc with varying light i realised it would be a nightmare to catch everything quickly in full manual.

So i set it to auto iso which i have not done before and hadnt really heard anything about either.

Is this what is usually used in these type of situations?
Any thoughts

Auto ISO has been implemented differently on several recent Canon bodies. On the first few like the 1D3 and 5D2 the feature is not especially useful.

On the 1D4 (which I have) I use auto ISO for any situation where I would have otherwise used Av mode in the past. On the 1D4 auto ISO allows me to select shutter speed and aperture and then it selects the ISO setting to complete the exposure according to the meter.

The only problem with the 1D4 approach is that there is no direct exposure compensation when working in this mode. I have to use custom funtion 1-16 to offset the meter as a workaround E.C. But since I use M mode 95% of the time, auto ISO is perfect for the remainder even with this niggle.

Yes. All the time. It's one of the best features of recent cameras such as the T2i, which was used to make these images.

Set at shutter priority 1/1250, camera chose ISO 250.

Set at Program AE, camera chose ISO 160.

Along with improved high ISO performance, Auto ISO has improved to the point that it's no more unusual than autoexposure or autofocus. It's something that lets a photographer stop worrying about settings and concentrate on finding and tracking action.

I use it when light changes and I need specific aperture and shutter speeds. Very useful. I wish Canon included exposure comp in this mode.

When I had the 40D I used it occasionally outdoors or where there was good light. I usually shoot in Av mode and found sometimes it didn't go as high as I liked resulting is slower shutter speeds. Perhaps if I used it in Tv mode but I don't really shoot any sports. The 40D is one of the first cameras to have it so it likely didn't work as good as newer cams. I don't really miss not having it on the 5D (the XTi, 20D, 30D I had before it didn't' have it anyways).

I've been playing with it lately on my newish 50D. Never was interested before, but in Av mode it seems to choose a reasonable shutter speed for handheld non-IS lenses.

I notice EC adjusts the ISO instead of the shutter speed in Av. Not sure I like that. I don't think I want that for an HDR burst.

Still experimenting...

Use it often depending on light and speed. Works great

Yeah, I believe I read an old thread that pretty much had the consensus that it wasn't so good on the 40D, but was much improved on the 50D.
