I'm heading to the Yucatan next month and I am considering leaving my Macbook Pro at home. I have a couple of Lacie 250GB mini drives (FW400/USB2 connectivity) that can be powered from my Apple iPhone charger, so I am wondering, is there a simple CF or SHDMC card reader that can write directly to one of these?

Alternative, what is a cheap, reliable option for portable storage with a simple led display to control the downloads, but without an expensive vga screens.

Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA with a 500Gb drive has served me very well.

Extremely fast offloads (especially if you turn off the LCD and just use it to "dump and run")

That's my favorite as well. Had the UDMA and now the Album, with a 500GB drive that I added myself.

Same here. Much more affordable way to go...

I use the Hyperdrive UDMA and the Nexto ND2700. The Hyperdrive is somewhat faster and has a (not too good) screen where you can view the images. The Nexto has a simple (one-button) interface and a simple LCD. But it is a lot cheaper than the Hyperdrive - £200 for the 500GB version (external link).

+1 for the Hyperdrive. And if you have an ipad, you can get the ipad version of the hyperdrive.

Guys, thanks for the comments. The Nexto answers the second question, although I note the preference for the Hyperdrive, albeit significantly more expensive.

Still looking for an answer to my real question though. Is there a CF card reader (or another option) that can connect directly to an external USB drive without using my Macbook Pro?

I don't think you can connect directly to an external USB drive with any device to power it.. ie. a computer.

I also own a HyperDrive and find it to be indispensible, with extreamly long battery life, nice picture review and easy and fast to use. Works great as a back up..

I have traveled with it many times and over 2 weeks of copying CF cards daily I have never had to charge the device.

i have seen enclosures that have built in card readers, but they've all needed a computer in order to make the transfer from the card to the external hd.

i was just looking into these options, can anyone tell me what the difference is between the "colorspace UDMA" and the "ipad hard drive".

i'm thinking it may have something to do with UDMA, but just can't find it even after comparing the specs side by side..

thanks..
