So long as you remember the cardinal rule at POTN - no talking politics or religion - and you guys were getting pretty darn close there. We do shut down threads that don't stay within bounds.

Heh! Yeah, that's where I just drift into incoherent babbling:)! Of course I then also have to wipe off the drool!

Wooooooooooo hooooooooo! I got organized and finsihed my Christmas shopping today. All done and it feels great. I was shocked to see how many people were in the mall tho....today the streets were really crappy as they were full of slush. So much for my thinking that people would probably stayed home guess a lot of people had my idea to! So how many people here are ready?
I got everything I need for Christmas done except the purchase of a Lexar card grrrrrrrrr I will have to order it on line. Does anyone have any cool ideas for family portraits for Christmas. I want something a little more nicer than the old in front of the tree shot LOL! Borrrring.

Understood! :D

But it's still a worthwhile topic to discuss social developments without politics raising it's ugly head....if we have the stomach for it.

But I suspect Tony is right....lets all just drift into incoherent rambling and to hell with the drool!

You'll (generic, not specific) have to get better at self-policing to pull that off.

Jon,, this is one of the best threads I've been involved in here on POTN.. To shut it down would be a crying shame.. But rules are rules..

Now, can we get back to photography, food, beer, sport, travel, beautiful women etc etc..

In early march, I'm going on a 14 days vacation to Thailand, my first real vacation in 5 years, I can't wait.

Only 14 days??

There is a lot to see in Thailand from cities, coastal resorts to mountain top villages.. All I can recommend is get away from the tourist traps and head up to the north into the mountains..

Have a great holiday..

Great advice no matter what country someone is headed to... (Replace "north" with whatever direction is necessary.)

How did we get away from those far more important topics anyway?

Okay Jon. I guess the thought that a whole bunch of people taking an interest in the world, and talking to other people from all over in the hope of gaining some insight, might be done without including politics is just plain dumb!

Now, about that holiday in Thailand.....

Yeah Thomas,, I've never been one for the touristy places, preferring to "do it alone".. I feel sorry for those tourist taking package tours, often by bus.. They are herded like sheep from place to place.. I call it McDonalds Travel..

As I write this, my daughter is in Koh Samui in Thailand.. She's having a stop over before coming to Laos in a few days.. I haven't seen her since New Year this year:( Two more sleeps for me and she'll be here:D

Me too. And my brother took his whole family to Vietnam a couple of years ago....they went to all sorts of wonderful places off the beaten track and were treated so well. They had a stunning time.

I've been to the US six times and haven't been to Hollywood or Disneyland!!! Do I qualify as being an adventurous traveller?

I cook and eat all those funny food covered. Last month spent three weeks in Spain and western Mediterranean enjoying Spanish food I grew up at home, including cuchinillo asado, roasted 14 day old suckling pig, enjoyed the corto, tail.
Next week, Going to back to back 14 nights cruise of western and eastern Caribbean, will surely enjoy seafood, hope to get good ceviche.
Old enough to be here, 12 grandkids, eldest senior at UC Berekley, another freshman at UCLA.

I've been to Vietnam a few times.. The best way to get around is via public transport.. Buses and trains are great and really cheap.. I love catching the overnight trains between major centres..

I was in the wilds of northern Laos this July for 10 days.. I took buses everywhere.. You know the type, where you sit on a sack of rice and listen to the chorus of chooks in the back.. The bottle of rice wine and tobacco pipe gets passed around.. Great fun!!

I understand, but are you trying to tell me that there are no poor people in the US?

There are no children in the US that attend school without shoes. There are now food stamps and various programs that help feed families. Even homeless people have places to get shelter and food (if they want it) because there are some that prefer the streets.

Sure there are poor people in the U.S. but the definition has changed since the 20's and 30's. There are hungry children but no deaths from malnutrition unless caused by neglect. Those we consider poor don't live in tents. Phones are paid for via a surcharge on everyone else's bill per federal law - this is a good thing because the phone can be a lifeline.

Yes there are the poor but not like it was.

Heh! The Disney extravaganza is great for kids, and it's nice for me to have grown up in Southern California and to have "been there and done that" -- but for us a-dults it can wear you out!

Hollywood is a place where if you get "off the beaten track" you can find interesting stuff -- for instance I have a little place that I drop into when I cruise through the area, a little Italian restaurant/lounge where you can sit at the bar and chat with the people and then find out that these are people who are "in the business", musicians, producers, writers for the LA Times, and they are all there to "get away" and just hang out, and oh, there's Clint Eastwood in the corner just having dinner with friends, and the place is in a whole different world from Hollywood Blvd/Sunset Blvd (although I've had a good time at the House of Blues on Sunset).

But yeah, knowing how to get away from the tourist areas helps wherever you go, although it can also be fun to hit the "hot spots" as a photog! Street photography can be entertaining in the busy places...

Heh! I read that as "in the hope of gaining some weight" and wondered, why in the hell would I want more of that?!?

Yeah... It's time to have my eyes checked again. My glasses prescription is way too far out of date.

I've lived most of my life in (North) Hollywood and have been to Disneyland more times than I really should admit (it's in the hundreds of visits by now).
