I think that an additional battery for the S95 is very small, light and cheap.

An additional battery is not an optional cause it doesnt change the fact that the s95 has a small capacity...yu can buy an additional battery for g12 too and have double shots available...so... g12 wins again..!!!

Pick them both up in your hands, they are quite different cameras. I used to own a G11 (and wish I kept it), and to me - it's much more of a tool that makes me want to take pictures, whereas the S95 is a great little pocket cam.

Hi! What did you replace the G11 with? I had a G9 and changed it for a G10 but always regretted it. Now thinking of a G12. M.

I went up to a T1i. Funny, I'm seriously considering going to a G12 now. I love the T1i's abilities, but carrying a DSLR around with kids is a pain in the you-know-what. I'd also like to carry my camera with me to work, but again - carrying my DSLR kit is impractical. I guess the optimal solution would be to have both cameras :-) but money is the problem there.

To me the reasons to get the G12 are the articulating LCD, the built-in ND filter, adapter rings for filter use, the flash hotshoe, and the ability to use an infrared remote like the RC-1.

The reasons to go with the S95 are the f/2 at the wide end of the lens, the small size, and lower cost. Both have dual-wheel controls.

I have a G9 and an S90, and the G9 sits on a shelf gathering dust and I occasionally contemplate getting it IR-converted. The S90 is just more convenient, given the size, and the lower-light capability makes it more usable for me in situations where I'm likely to need a smaller camera.

While the hotshoe on my G9 was convenient for Strobist work, I found it less so for on-camera flash work, because of how top-heavy this instantly made it--an EX speedlight is much larger than a G, and it's not as if you get e-TTL bells and whistles as an advantage. An ST-E2 or RF-602 transmitter on the hotshoe, however, is a perfect fit weight/size-wise, so I always went off-camera flash with the G9.

With my s90, I just grab my SB-26 and use it in optical slave mode off-camera with the S90's pop-up (which you could also do with an LP160 or Yongnuo YN). If I'm doing macro work and I'm close in enough for the pop-up light to register in the image, or I'm outside where optical slaves won't work well, I can take a $10 optical slave, connect it to my RF-602 transmitter's PC port, then gaffer tape it over the pop-up and shove RF-602 receivers on my strobes (the usual P&S Strobist kludge). Admittedly, I usually take a simpler route less hazardous to my S90's pop-up and just use an SLR or my G9 instead for this, but it's not like you can't do Strobist work with an S95 if you're stubborn enough. :)

I just chose the s95. My camera was for underwater purposes. The bigger lens size fo the g12 causes a couple of problems. It eliminates the difference in minimum focusing distance. Adds dramatically to some brands housing costs. You are able to set up ttl with the g12 at a large cost. So I figured the f2, small size and same sensor left the s95 as the best choice.

Two things I use the most on my G11: articulating screen and the exposure lock as I mainly use it when taking the dog for a walk, so I shoot one-handed

So I'd get the G12 over the S95 and the LX5 ;)

If it moves, snap it - and if it doesn't move, snap it twice just in case it does move!

I have recently purchased both the S95 with Franeic grip and a G12. Im having a very hard time deciding which to keep but I really only want one to stick around. Unlike having multiple bodies, having multiple compacts seems a bit wasteful to me (I can use the money to buy another unnecessary Think Tank bag ). On one hand, the G12 feels better and has the option to mount a flash. On the other hand, the S95 is easier to carry around. The S95 is also easier for my wife to use. I guess I could keep both and label the S95 "the wife's cam".

Just wait for a few months and see if the new NEXC3 will be a lot better. =)

I bought it mainly for the hotshoe capability...that alone is worth gold...

Markulous, when I shot with a G11 I worked up a sling arrangement from OpTech bits and pieces. Kept me from dropping the Canon when I was walking my dog.

Used it too in Quebec City in the rain; allowed me to slide the camera under my jacket, so I didn't have to slip it into a pocket. (Worried I would have missed the pocket...)

I looked at both the G12 and the S95. I went with the G12...I like the DSLR like controls, the Leica look, the more substantial feel.

I've got a couple of DSLR's and about 7 lenses. I use this for serious stuff...the G12, for a general carry around. It won't slip in my pocket of my golf shirt, but I do carry around, using the strap around my neck.

It's a great camera...I also have a 430 EX 11 flash...now that I've got the two figured out...heavy...but I really like the photographs.

what about shutter lag between those two?

it sometimes gets really annoying when there's need for a quick shot of a moment which gets out of the focus or subject changes thanks to the G12 lag :-/ i'm not talking about taking fast shots of a kids or sports, but when one have all settings set as he want in whatever mode he like and there's sudden moment to capture, which then goes away just for that split second. my old A610 used to fire almost immediately in comparison to G12.

hows S95 dealing with that?

Since I started this thread maybe I should add the final part to my own story ... I bought the G12 but just sold it the other day, after using it only a few times over the six months I owned it. It turns out that for me it was too big to always go with me. I've been considering the S95 and have been close to buying it a couple of times, it's tempting each time I see one in a shop. It's not quite all that I want in a camera though; I did go for the G12 initially despite the size after all. I think that for the time being I'll just skip the idea of a small camera since I tend to bring the SLR most of the time anyway. The mobile phone will have to do for the few times I want to take a snapshot of something.
