I am thinking the Bitterns belong in this family and since this is one of my favorites, I will include it in the 1000. I have never seen another out in the open like this. This photo op lasted only seconds.

American Bittern #117

I watched this juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron and his mom, hunting for crawfish in a roadside ditch. When he caught this unfortunate mud bug, he clipped off the sizeable claws and swallowed it whole. So, is this learned behavior or hereditary? Clearly, swallowing one of these with the claws still attached could be fatal.

Yep, bitterns surely belong to the heron family! I'd love to see one IRL, but your image is excellent.

What's a mud bug and why would it be fatal?

BTW, your images are #118 and #119

Mudbug=crawfish=big, sharp, powerful claws. If you swallowed one of these live, I think it would cut you open, from the inside, but who knows?

Ah, I've never heard them called that before :) Yeah, I guess it would be a good idea to cut the claws off first (although some of the best meat is there).
