Where are you located? Maybe someone in your area could let you try theirs?

If you're anywhere near me, you can try out both of mine and make an informed choice.;)

Try renting one. If you are in a big city you can rent one for a day, and if you're lucky the camera store is closed Sundays. Then you can pick it up late Friday, and return it Monday morning for a one-day fee.

I did that once and even got an extra day because of Memorial Day, so I ended up with the lens all day Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday morning for $40.

By the way, the 100-400L has a sweet spot of 7.1. That's what I found.

Another from the "dust pump" (this guy is floating backward in the air after a 40-yard catch, and still somehow came down with the ball, broke those two tackles, and made it to the end zone):

if money is no object...skip them both and go for the 500L...or hell 800L...

but in my life...money matters...one costs just about half as much as the other...so that's what i bought...i'm happy with it...

I struggled with the same question and eventually went with the 100-400L and have no regrets.

+1. You will not find this lens in the same price category. They can be had cheap used, but are picked up very quickly and hard to find. As for the new OS version flooding the market with the original...I wouldn't bet on it. The OP would have to wait a long time for this to happen anyway since that lens hasn't even been released yet.

simple reason for my choice of cannon was that at 400mm I can do 5.6.
