I hate to seem negative, but it seems like every single band pic I see has 4-5 guys standing around in jeans with their hands in their pockets, trying to look tough or serious or sexy or something. I would really, really love to see something different. Even the hackneyed guitarist-on-railroad-tracks stuff is starting to look good by comparison.

It's not an exhibition most people would get a chance to see, but backstage at the Karlsruhe (Germany) opera house there are shots of the different sections of the orchestra that are really creative. I've forgotten details, but maybe the trombones are in a garbage dump (with their instruments), while the string basses are down by the river or something and the flutes might be` in a coffee house.

How about posing these five at a skateboard park, with their guitars? Maybe they could look like they were riding the instruments, or playing them while they were on the boards? How about at an equestrian ring, with horses around? Or even just leaning on a car in the middle of Leeds?

Just a rant. (BTW, the lighting looks kind of hot on my screen.)

The reason why I don't do it with insturments in teh shot because for promotional images it always looks a bit cheesy to me. they are a metal band and wanted the standard metal band pose looking from below up to them, too make them look big and hard that represents metal music.

Thats one where they wanted to look more chilled out and as they are all mates they come across as a gang and just friends with eachother. Every band want something different. As you are working for them you give them what they want.

Jordy:

any way you slice it, doing band shoots is difficult. Having been on the other end of the camera for way too many years, my band pics have always sucked, too.

The last one we did were all separates and the photographer stitched them together in kind of a pano. We used the shot as a header (of sorts) on our website.

I've done a couple band shoots myself and bombed miserably. It's just hard to 'tell the story' in a single snap of a band.

(a) this is a really cool image. I love the tonality and feeling you were going for!

(b) A freeking pringles tube? Seriously??? (scratching head, wondering why I didn't think of this) Looks like it is time to get my munchies on!

Well had nothing to shoot last week and knew the wife would be watching the x factor last night

so I thought I would have a go at a self portrait using just one light. Not easy to do as I found out. When I try this again I will try shooting tethered to see if that helps. Should have used a reflector on the right side to help fill a little bit of light in. Again not easy on your own

havent' posted in here for a long time..

but here goes...

The Ryan Supremacy

had a chance to work with Ryan O Hicks as a Model

my concept was to create a photo that looks like a movie still..

i have been watching TV shows and paying serious attention to the lighting..

shows that have great lighting..

CSI Miami
Star Trek movie - the one with young captain kirk

the actual show that i was watching was dexter - showtime that inspired me on this...

but i wanted to create something different with the Borne Identity theme...

i don't know if it is like the Borne Series, but oh well it was a try..

lighting was 4 speed lights on this one

2 in the rear bare at 1/8 power
1 camera left in a 86PML at 1/2 power with green gel
1 camera right with 40 inch Soft lighter with blue gel at 1/16th power

set up shot here www.flickr.com/photos/-phamster-/5222664012/ (external link)
