is the nifty fifty popular with wedding/event photographers? i'd assume so, but its just so hard to believe for its price.

Our wedding photographer shot all of our pre and post wedding shots with this lens. Not the actual ceremony tho..

They should make this lens a compulsory purchase for first time DSLR buyers...

it SHOULD be the kit lens, or at least, a choice as a kit lens. the way they used to do it...

hmmm . . . well, the 35mm f/2 is a nice lens. IMO a much better lens than the nifty 50. More expensive, yes, but a very good lens at a decent price ($300). From Canon's perspective, it's probably hard to justify producing a whole line of very cheap mediocre lenses.

Well, they've already done that... I should know, I have to sell that crap all day... I would just like a cheap prime lens exactly like the nifty that is 50mm equiv on a crop camera. 35mm would be close enough. Nikon sells their 35mm f1.8 for $200, it would be nice if Canon offered something similar.

35mm f/2 for $300 isn't similar enough? Is a 35mm f/2 with the plastic build quality of the nifty 50 what you're thinking of? Could they even get down to $200 by swapping out metal for plastic?

I don't know what Canon can or can't do.. But Nikon does a great little 7-blade 35mm for $190,,, Would be cool if Canon offered this as well.

Would also get the price down to make an EF-S 35mm rather than an EF. May be EF-S 35 or 30 f/1.8. Should be the same like EF 50mm f1.8 from the cost point of view. Anyway, let's dream :)

If it was an ef-s I couldn't use it. :(

To get into an early Christmas spirit, here's two 50 1.8 shots from last year, both wide open (obviously lacking the famous pentagon) :)

Some of my lenses focus beyond infinity...!
