I've bumped the dial so many times by accident, glad that it was never on a paid gig... I'd love to do this, but they should do it for free :/

The hard part about taping over the dial is doing it without also blocking the power switch and without blocking the hot shoe or pop up flash.

But let me find my cell phone and I'll grab a pic for you.

Leaving the corner folded under makes it easier to peel it back when I want to change the mode.

Also note the tape over the diopter knob because sometimes that get's bumped too.

Here's the way knobs should be done. Note the locking button on both the mode dial and the exposure compensation dial. The metering mode dial on the other side has a locking button too.

Store your favorite setting (whether it's M, P or...) under C1, C2 and C3. Then set your camera to C3. Now you have a two position "bump margin" for the dial, before it changes behavior of the camera.

This is just USD 5. Send them to my account.

Great idea, unless you actually use C1,C2 and C3 the way they were meant to be used.

I'm not sure what Canon did differently with the dial on the 7D, but I have bumped it out of position without realizing it on several occasions. I don't remember this ever happening on my 30D or 40D.

However, I don't expect that Canon should pay for making every modification that I would like to see on one of their cameras. (Can you imagine the tidal wave of demands, many trivial, they would be hit with if that were the expectation?) The comments here indicate that not everyone has this mode dial problem, and that some would prefer not to have a locking dial even if it were free. It is nice that they are not making those who want/need it badly enough wait for the next model to get it.

+1
$100 is a bit steep for a button, but I'm glad its an option, vs having to buy a new model. And it is a new feature, not a design flaw, so Canon' shouldn't give it away. If a 5d-III isn't in my future soon, I'll upgrade mine. LIke many above, the 2 camera bumping the dial while working issue pops up frequently.
