The more you shoot with the sun going straight into your lens the more flare you'll get. If you filter the sun through trees, bushes, etc, you will get backlighting w/out the flare. Just depends what look you are going for.

Here's one with backlighting and the hazy sunflare look...

And another taken at the exact same location, but just by changing the angle I'm shooting from, I lose the hazy flare look entirely.

Those are very nice shots. Any chance you could describe how you meter those scenes to get good facial exposures? I always shoot in M with spot metering mode and I found it difficult to take a good light reading of the face when camera is pointing into the sun.

I always spot meter off the skin, and I chimp a lot. lol I look at my LCD screen and if it doesn't look how I want it to, I adjust accordingly. :) The first one could technically be described as 'underexposed' based on her skin tones, but I liked the way the colors and tones looked at that exposure so I left it there.
